After several hours, I figured out that if one initially uses X-control, it seems one must install new bios via x-control rather than bootable disc, or you can't disconnect the usb without fragging the x-chip...hmmm.  

Anyway, sorry for mudddying up the forum with requests I solved with extra time on my own; but than again without this forum, I probably wouldn't have had the confidence to do this anyway, so thanks.

well at least you posted how you solved it.  I think that makes it worth keeping on here in case someone else has the same problem
