I think it's a little strange that he posted this on the 11th about how scared he was and blah blah and then 4 days later he was posting on other threads about how many games you can fit on a 120gig hard drive and hasn't bothered to update this thread with any new info.

Well, that kinda questions me also.......maybe he did lie and made everything up??  huh.gif

The moral to this is: If you get framed for doing anything bad, get a good lawyer and ditch or at least hide your illegal stuf so that the cops don't have incriminating material against you.

You can't blame people on these forums for being skeptical, there's so much bullshit and lying going on here every day it's hard to know what to beleive.

It's kind of funny that people assumed the tread was bogus when there was no response. But no one thought maybe his laywer said posting the whole affair on the internet wasn't the best idea.

Anyways, glad everything worked out.

BTW im also from Portland.

That was exactly what I said when I posted - that his lawyer likely would advise him not to talk to anyone, definitely not post the facts of his case on the net, and that I expected not to see him post back.  Funny how the people that call someone a liar don't have the consideration to read a thread through first and at least try to pick up a little bit of sense in why someone might hurt their case by posting the facts of the case as it unfolds for us to read (although the entertainment value would be high).

To the original poster - glad you got that taken care of.  I can't imagine things going better for you because it certainly looked like they were trying to play mind games.  I'm just glad you got to a lawyer before they got you to say something to build a case on.  Good job - now don't backup software you don't own. cool.gif

Been reading this thread since 6am. fire alarm went off at the campus and police swarmed the place, going through every apartment here. thought they were looking at my xboxes trying to incriminate me on one thing or another. Well glad to hear nothing happened to ya. For anyone else cought in a situation like this remember the good advice given.

1. SHut your pie hole
2. Get Laywer
3. get rid of any incriminating items

I didn't read every message on this thread so someone may have already stated this fact.  I just wanted to go back to the original question.  The officers legally seized the software.  The warrant in any case lists what items they are specifically looking for.  However, anything else illegal that is found during a legal search can be obtained as evidence of any crime.  It does NOT have to be listed on the warrant.  As long as they were searching in an area that the items listed could have been hidden, they can be seized.  I used to be a police officer myself and know how this works.  Now before everyone blasts me for being a cop, I left because I couldn't stand the way other officers treated civilians all the time.  So, I'm not taking the cops side on this one.  I'm just stating the facts, what they did was legal.  Also was going to add that this isn't a crime local cops would normally give a damn about as is obvious by the the fact that they dropped it.  Glad things worked out for you.

i was wondering if maybe they would have had to get a second warrant to be able to check what was on the discs (cuz discs can be labeled anything, i could write "pirated software" on a blank disc and leave it in my room, its not illegal cuz its just a blank disc (right?) but i guess the above post indicates they didnt need a second warrant

That is a very interesting perspective.  It's good to get that "insider" take on the situation.

I was always under the impression that local cops wouldn't care about that sort of thing (or for the most part even be aware of it or able to recognize most kinds of piracy).  If I got pulled over for speeding would the officer care about the copied audio CDs in my CD case?  (For the record, I use only copied CDs in my car so as not to scratch the original.  My CD player tends to eat CDs and they usually only last a few month in the car).

For the most part a local cop wouldn't really have the knowledge of copyright laws to really give a care.  And if you're merely backing up games for your own personal use then the Feds aren't going to waste the time persecuting you either.  If you started doing something stupid like selling burned copies to people and drawing more attention to yourself then you'd be much more likely to get in trouble.
