Some of the advice here is complete crap. National Security Agency guidelines for wiping hard drives is 7 random write cycles ( that would take 18 hours times 7 on a 120 gig drive!) - take it apart, bust/bend the discs, and toss it in a pond.
Good advice, get the lawyer, the first thing he's gonna do is tell you to shut up - to everyone, friends, family, god, discuss your case with *NO ONE*.
The school can do whatever it wants, yes, there's an appeals process, there's a strong possibility your lawyer can help with this, if they nick you unfairly, you have a right to sue them for money, so they have to be very careful.
If the cops had an "eyewitness" you'ld have already been booked, an eyewitness account is plenty of evidence to book you, likewise on the video tape - if they had one, you'ld already be in jail.
Somehow, I'm wondering if you really are guilty - in order to get that warrant, they had to have *some* evidence to present to a judge, probably that person who already admitted they stole items, or someone at the school said you told them you did it.
In any case, if you didn't have the items, their job is alot harder, and the software you had is an even tougher case for them, it's going to take alot of resources for them to prosecute, and unless someone is really pissed at you, it's unlikely they'd bother, but really, the only thing that matters is the judge, they *make* the law, at least as far as you are concerned, yes, you can appeal, you might win, but they can pretty much do whatever they please, no matter what the law says, people are wrongly convicted all the time in this country, and many can't afford to buy their freedom with a lawyer.
Good luck, get a lawyer, ditch *anything* incriminating, shut up, and enjoy your personalized trip to hell on earth.
