Occasional Freeze When Using X-chip
« on: November 02, 2004, 08:18:00 AM »

Not sure what might be causing this. Though I did have a nerve-wracking hell of a time rebuilding the LPC port, originally everything seemed to be going well. I had the right bios flashed before booting it up and all the wires seemed to be making good contact since it loaded no problem on the first try. But now every once in a while it will just freeze on me. The whole system will just hang. It doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing (FTP, letting music play in the background of Avalaunch, while playing Halo from an original disc) but it only seems to happen when I start up using the X-Chip. If I boot using the stock MS bios, no problems. Could a loose solder point be causing it? I haven't replaced the HDD yet either and it's getting a little full. Or could it have been a memory issue; too many things running, or one program running after another that isn't leaving enough free space. Any idea's would be helpful. Thanx

Updated the bios to 1.2 for 1.6 and it hasn't happened since. Don't know what could have been the problem exactly, I know some people were having issues with Dolby Sound but I'm stuck in the land of stereo still. Anyway thanks, I should have known better and tried the newer bios before even asking.

By anychance can you post your manufacturer code and if the power button cable to xbos is yellow or black?

As new 1.6b xbox ins being determined that causes freezing on bios's.

If you have the blue linker wire connected to the X-Chip remove it. It should fix this random lock up. Got some reports that this happens in some versions 1.6 like the 1.0 where the blue linker wire is connected to the X-Chip would cause random lockups.

I have a 1.0 and I left my blue wire on the chip. I will try this when I get home. My lock ups are not bad but I do get them every now and them...  Thanks for the tip!

If indead it is the blue wire causing the issue maybe interference and since not all people are experincing it, would mean way you have it routed in xbox against components causing issue. If without cable works, reattach wire and reroute a different way.

Okay first off thank you both cravavr and easybuy for the tips. Updating the bios did not work afterall.

Yes, I do have a brown power cable, but unfortunately I can't find my manufacturer's code anywhere (I took the sticker off completely to open the box and lost it shortly thereafter). However I did just run across this on the main page of xbox-scene:

More Xbox v1.6B Updates: Lockups caused by Hynix RAM and Philips DVD?
>> From TeamXecuter.com:
QUOTE

Some interesting finds....
All v1.6B's that we, and others have found to freeze at dash or during game have Hynix RAM chips and Philips DVD drives.
All v1.6B's that we found to work fine have Samsung Ram chips and Samsung DVD drives.
Feedback is appreciated to further confirm these findings.....

Also this was posted by XOR, A moderator on the Smartxx forums

How ironic is this... I've just had a 1.6 with a brown Eject lead...
Anyway, did everything as per normal, but wouldn't work, locking up on flubber... Anyway in cases where I've seen this happen before I decided to change the HDD for an older one pulled from a 1.1 unit.
In it went, formatted it up, installed the software, locked the drive, bingo it worked...
Currently testing the HDD now, and it's already showing hundreds of physical errors on the drive (this was new out of the box?), so just re-affirming my initial thought, bad HDDs...
If someone gets an equivalent by all means do what you can to fix your own issues, but don't discount that the HDD itself may be bad, regardless of if the XBOX still has it's selaphane on and had never yet been used.

We tested new hard drives on all the machines that lock up and it didnt make any difference - however its another thing for users to check.
We have found the bug in FlashBIOS and will hopefully release an update over the weekend. We should also be releasing a new X2 and X3 bios shortly.

Now some of that really doesn't apply to my situation, I have the Toshiba Samasung DVD drive, but I do have Hynix Ram in my box.

First thing I'm going to try is taking off the blue cable from the chip, which is infact running right over the top of one of the Hynix ram chips. If this works I'll try to re-route it another way like cravavr suggests. I'd really like to keep it since I was also planning on actually adding a permanent port for the USB plug right there next to the Ethernet port.

I have high hopes that this will fix the problem especially since this only happens when I boot up using the mod chip. I have yet to have any problems when booting using the stock bios from MS.

Thanks again.

MOTHER F*****!!! I just disconnected the damn D0 point trying to get that stupid blue linker cable off! This is a lesson in futility!! It's going to be a long rosin filled night.

Got it all back on there, it wasn't really all that bad, much easier the second time. But it didn't matter anyway since it's still freezing up on me. The blue linker cable is out completely and it still froze so that wasn't it.

Beginning to think it might be a cooling issue. It seems to happen more often after I've been playing or using it for a while.

Since you are seeing the brown cable, rest assure you are a supposed 1.6b.

As of right no no biso is working 100% on it, but be rest assure the X-Chip Team is working on a solution.

If you are reading up on these issues, the rewrite of memory routine did not solve, so its mor ethen just memory manufacturer timing issues.

Also, be positive you have no pin in pin#4 on LPC Port.  Thats the one every one tells you not to have inserted.

As for your D0 falling off, why not resolder to the alternative D0 under the motherboard?

Yes I'm postive pin#4 is out. And as for the alternative D0 point, well, I didn't know about it. I've already got this one back on. now, but I'll definitely find out what your talking about and consider it for the future. Thanks for the updates on the issues w/ 1.6b. Wish there was something I could do to help them figure it out.

Now works on Xbox v1.6B also.
* M8plus.bin is a new BIOS based on the latest 5838 kernel, and has the same features as M7, It will work on XBOX versions (1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5)
* M8plus_16.BIN is also based on the 5838 kernel and has the same features as M7. It will ONLY work on XBOX version 1.6 and 1.6B
This bios wont work on X2 lite/lite+ series off bank 1!
Thanx to Team Executer for bringing attention to this issue.
Thanx to Franz for uncovering the problem.

So I've got this new bios downloaded now but haven't flashed it to the chip yet. I was hoping there might be a version specifically for the X-chip but that doesn't look like it's the case. I was also checking on the evolution x forums and noticed that no one there has mentioned anything like this pertaining to the x-chip yet so I may head over there and ask around as well.

Anyway back to the information you wanted, just in case this doesn't work. I can find the #'s on the memory chips easily enough I suppose (I'll be opening her back up to reattach that blue linker cable so I can flash it anyway - hopefully without ruining any of the soldering this time!), but I already did some looking in the M$ bios and I don't know exactly what info you might be wanting. Is there maybe something I can tell just by looking at the stock dasboard files through FTP?

Here's what I have readily available:
1.6B Xbox
X-Chip
EvoX V1.2-1600 BIOS 1.0.5838.1 XB:1090 (don't know what XB:1090 means)
Samsung DVD-ROM SDG-605F
DVD Firmware x204
Harddisk Model ST310014A (stock)
Serial #: 101470143805
Standard AV pack
Pic Version: P2L (don't know what this is either)

All of the above was pulled through the EvoX Setup Monitor/Info section. Thanx once again.

OK, quick update. Rather than rip the whole thing open I just loaded the new bios by flashing it from the setup menu after transferring it over through FTP. And...

Bad juju!

Nothing. Literally. My box wouldn't even load. It started to once but then froze during flubber. So it's gone now. Maybe it wasn't the right one "Yoshihiro-m8-1.6B-Memory-Fixe-Beta4" it was from Xbins still in a folder called "unofficial". And yes I did rename it to something under eight chars before trying to use it and I made sure it was unzipped and in .bin format before flashing and so on. Anyway it's about time to go pick up Halo 2, so this is all going to have to wait a little longer.

Did someone say Beta???? The Yoshihiro  is know to cause issues.

Use official release Evox M8 for 1.6b boxes for now, until Team X-Chip releases a X-Chip special bios.
