as far as i can tell the USB cable is only necessary if you want to flash your chip from a program on your PC.  I dont think its really necessary because im pretty sure there are other ways of flashing it.

I havent needed to myself, but im sure there would be some tutorials that would tell you how to.

good luck with the chip, im really happy with mine at the moment.

It is necessary if you want to override the cromwell bios and erase its OS to load bios's upon start up without selecting them each time you boot.

Get a usb cable and then grab xcontrol from eb2k and read the manual on the software.

If you have a USB printer or scanner you can use those cables instead of buying new one.

I believe the cable is called a A-B USB Cable ( standard for a printer )
