Mounting The Usb Plug In The Case
« on: October 17, 2004, 11:34:00 AM »

Just wondering if anyone has done any case modding to allow for the USB connector to be accessed without having to open up the box.  I haven't done this yet but want to and wondered if anyone has any ideas.

We just took the blue wire and ran it right out the side of the Xbox.

You can run it out the back where the fan vent is...  I just looped the blue wire around the top edge (run the wire through, loop it over the top, and then back through... and out the back through the fan vent).  I then used a wire-tie to wire tie the loop to the xbox frame.  This is so it doesn't jerk the mod chip if someone were to pull on it or if it got caught on something.  It's not a real pretty solution, but very functional.

I used the fan vent to run the blue wire as well, but used double sided tape to tape it to xbox.

Allright, that's what I'll do for now then, just to keep things simple. But if I can think of any other ways to get it in there I'll post back.  Thanks.

Allright, I've finished two boxes now without doing anything special to the case, but for my next one I'm going to be breaking out the dremmel. I've looked at it and I think the best place to mount it would be in the left rear corner. It would have to be the corner so that you can not only give access to the USB port but also install a button for the override to Cromwell BIOS (though why/when you'd need to use it I really don't know... I'm going to do it anyway). This is all going to have to wait until after Halloween though since that's when I'll be picking up the new xbox (waiting for the end of year promotion MS is going to be starting). But if I can get ahold of a camera while I'm doing it, I'll be posting the whole experience here.

Why not mount above the Video or LAN connection at rear.

Also try some black magic marker on the green PCB to make it match xbox as well.  You could use paint to :P

I installed mine on the back left corner by just drilling a hole as low as I could go without hiting the MB.  Put a little double sided tape, mounted , and I've never had any problems with it being mounted there.

I went the lazy way -- I used a bit of hot glue and gued it to the back of the Xbox. Kinda hard to see in the pic, but you can see it right above the LAN port:

Anyway, it's on the back of the console, so you rarely see it anyway  wink.gif

Sounds good, it would fit a lot better there with the rest of the ports than it would on the corner anyway. And besides the only reason I wanted a corner install was to make the button accessible but now that I'm working with a 1.6 box that's the last thing I want to do. Loading it with the Cromwell bios would be disasterous. I'll put mine in today and then well just have to see which of us can get a picture up here first.

Don't know if anyone cares anymore, but I finally got a digital camera so I figured I'd post a pic of how mine turned out.

It's not perfect but good enough for me. It might be hard to tell in the pic but the port sits just a little bit further back (deeper) than the LAN port. And my shaky ass left some scratches with the dremmel but all in all it's in there and it does work. I ended up shaving off some of the PCB and then hot gluing it all down on top of the housing of the LAN port. It still just barely barely fit.

That's pretty cool. If you want a really easy, quick way to do it, I just ran it through the top back of the fan and then bought some little zap straps. Then you can mount it towards the top right of the back of the fan grille, using a zap strap through the grille and around the silver usb part. It is really sturdy too.

I did it the real easy way...
I took wire cutters and took a small hol just big enough for the usb connection out of the vents directly next to the X-chip,
Real easy,
not to much work 'cause u just cut a couple of tiny strips out of the vents.
and i used electrical tape wrapped around the usb port to ensure a snug fit....
only thing it when i take the xbox apart again i have to make sure to push the usb port back inside so i dont rip it off while taking off the lid...
