When soldering the Lframe/D0 point use the alt point under the motherboard instead of the via point on the top. The Lframe/D0 point under the motherboard is much easier to solder.

Excellent points, I appreciate it.  I have an X-Chip on the way and a 1.6 Xbox dying to take it on... this article will undoubtedly help a lot... I'd already had your idea of 'practicing' on stuff (old modem and NIC laying around) so I'm feeling ok about it, thanks for sharing your thoughts!

So I did my install... I don't have the chip yet, but I had time and wanted a jump on it so I got the pinheaders from Frys hehe... MAN I was daunted by the whole thing... but I gotta say two things:

1.  Every solder basically went perfectly.
2.  I never had to clean up.

Regardless, I was still very stressed putting it all back together to see if it'd still boot... and it does.

So.  When I get my chip I'm praying it'll work after soldering those last two contacts (I even already soldered the d0 and the +5v leads to their proper places, and just taped 'em outta the way).
