Why wouldn't someone let you see the drive?  That's stupid.  Chances are, if they didn't want you to see the drive, it's probably not a sammy.

you can hardly expect the store to let you open a sealed box before buying it.

go to EB or gamestop on the right day when the right person is working, they may let you check out the drives on the used xboxs

just tell them you want to make sure it works right and when they pop a game in to demonstarte it works sneak a peek at the drive tray

i think i read somewhere that the sega bundle systems uses samsung drives, not 100% but so far it's been good to me.

I've purchased 3 sega bundled boxes and none of them contained a Samsung.  They were all Phillips Drives.  The best way to find a Sammy is to find someone you know what got a box with a Sammy and buy one from the same place.  Most likely they will all be the same Drives since they were all from the same shipment.  (That's how I got my sammy smile.gif)

I just bought a brand new Xbox from EB.  Got a Samsung drive in it as well as it being either a 1.2 or a 1.3 (anyone know a way for sure to tell the two apart?) with a MFG date of 8/2003 and has a XXXXXXX 33XXX serial number.  It's not a 1.0/1.1 because it has the double range of power connectors instead of the single and it's not a 1.4 or 1.5 because it has the Conexant chip and not the Focus.

Now did I luck out or what when I bought it?

the serial number means it's a 1.3, and yes, they made 1.3's with sammys - I bought a couple myself made 3/13/03 with sammy's.

Best bet, is to look for a 1.3 at circuit city - they have a 30 day "no hassle" return, just buy one, take it home, and open the dvd tray ( not the xbox itself) - if you get a sammy, most excellent, if not, take it back and try again...

I thought there were other boxes that had the XXXXXXX 33XXX serial numbers as well...  All 1.4s and 1.5s (which is ruled out in my case), some 1.1s (again rulled out in my case) and some 1.2 and 1.3s.   At least according to the xb-versions on xbox-scene.com

you can not guarentee a samsung, simple as that!.

if you want a samsung, go for second hand one from a computer store,
i've brought a few samsungs here in the uk from GAME, GAMESTATION, etc, all I ask them is that if I can power it up before I buy it, then eject the tray

fair enough, they can refuse to do that, if so, take your cash elsewhere or be nice
