Can't See Chip With Usb Anymore!
« on: July 20, 2004, 05:44:00 PM »

I was getting some FRAGs with the adapter (my screw hole has been stripped for a long time) so I swapped the solderless adapter for a pinheader. Everything seemed to go fine but now I can't connect to my chip with USB..

I connect the cable to the chip, the red light goes on, and I hear the "ding" that WinXP makes to let you know something is connected. I run the X-Control software - I hear a disconnecting WinXP "ding", a reconnecting "ding", then the red light on the chip goes off and I can't connect to it.

I want to restore the chip to its original state, but since it FRAGs when I boot, and since I can't connect with USB, I don't know where to start!

What color is the X in the XControl titlebar after 2nd ding sound?red/green.

Are you powering xbox when xchip connecetd to it and usb cable?

Have you tried reinstalling the USB driver?

Have you tried booting xbox with xchip installed and programmer while holding the button on programmer down?  This supposedly resets its settings.  Unless you whipped the defaulted shipped bios?

- Green. I can drop down both menus, but when I "Read All", the progress goes slowly from 1 to 100%, then it's just the same array of gray boxes.

- Tried with Xbox on, tried with Xbox off, tried with chip unplugged.

- Twice :-\

- So that's what the button is there for.. didn't get a change from doing that.

What'd you attempt to flash your chip with?

Grey boxes just indicate you loaded other 3rd party bios that not in cromwell code shipped on chip.

Simple select File, Load Raw and select the full.bin file and do a X-Chip - Write changes.  This will bring you back to state you received chip in 1st place.

How do you load a 3rd party bios, such as evox?

IE: 4mb bios? Also, how do you flash its skins to the chip if the bio's itself is 4mb?

For evox,

Do the load raw image and load the EVOX 4 MB file,

Now right click on Banks 4-5 and do a load bios and select your SKIN, and then do a X-Chip write changes

5 minutes later you have evox on chip, and skin for the xchip features only, skins are not for teh hacked M$ kernel which you see @ boot time, skins are for when you press start button at boot time to enter xchip settings and then you see skins.

So with your question how you load skin ontop of 4 MB file, you don't you simple replacing current one and writing over it.

Okay.. I did exactly that - but when I "Write Changes", the File and X-Chip menus gray out so I that can't select them, but there is no indication that it's doing anything, like a progress bar, and the light on the chip is still off.

EDit: Here's a screencap of exactly what I see when it's supposed to be writing full.bin to the chip

Actually I'm one of the poor soles, that eb2k tech support coudl nopt help as they know praticattly nothing on chip, all self taught and read there PDF manual over and over and just plain expertiments.

Weird, x turns green means can read chip, and supposedly write.  I woudl contact there tech support and see if you can get issue resolved.

One last suggestion, woudl eb to try another PC.

Usually there is a percent display on the title bar, do you see that? I know when writing on mine it takes about  10 seconds or so to show up.

christineyoung.. thanks for all your help. I'll try another PC when I get the chance, but for now I just crossposted this problem on their help-forums.

edit: twisted.penguin, nope, there's no indication of progress - it just stays like the picture.

I've just quadruple-checked my d0 and pinheader install by plugging in my old (real) Chameleon and I can boot up to my hacked dash.. so it's not a soldering problem.
