Does An Old Matrix Chip Fit In A 1.4 Crystal Xbox?
« on: May 23, 2004, 11:28:00 AM »

Hi

I've got an old (Brand new) Matrix modchip kicking about.

...Do they fit straight in a 1.4 Xbox, or is there more to it than this?

...Also can u flash any size BIOS on it as its blank at the moment and I would like to put a 256k bin on it.

Any other relevant advice on the Matrix is appreciated.

A Matrix will not "just" fit into a brand new 1.4. You will need to solder a few things.

First: Fill your LPC holes with solder so your pins can make contact. Screw to the board, but don't look for alignment yet. (As your D0 won't be connected yet)

Second: Take some electrical tape and place it on the bottom of the D0 pogo pin. The part of the PCB that sticks out. This is your D0 pin. Make it a couple layers thick just to be safe.

Third: Solder a wire from the D0 point on your MOBO to the top of the D0 pin. Look in the tutorial section for pics if you don't know where it is. You can either use the top point (harder to solder) or the Alternate point on the bottom of the mobo.

The Matrix can only hold a 256K bios.

I did this on a 1.3 mobo and everything worked fine.

Good luck

uhm.. no.

you did it on a 1.2, not 1.3. the matrix will NOT work on 1.3 and up.
matrix is a simple 49LF020 with no lframe emulation.. 1.3 and up no longer have lframe (1.6 does again, but has a completely different layout), rendering matrix and all mods without emulated lframe useless.

ok so I was wrong. Sorry.

old engineer: don't do a thing that I said in my previous post. Instead buy a Xenium or SmartXX chip.

I have a Xenium installed via Pin Header. Wasn't too hard.

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated.

...Glad I didn't try and fit it, nice to confirm that it only fits in the older Xbox's.

Cheers all.

i got a matrix working on my 1.3 without filling my holes... it took some foil and alot of patience with the new lframe# ... ifyou dont mind a crazy risk try it... you will have to patch the D0 wire from the chip to the lframe on the southbridge

If you want a No-Solder mod for your 1.4, you best go for a Xbit.
