For the widest abilities of the chip, run in Mode 1 bank 0 with a current BIOS (X2 4977 is stable to versions 1.3, M7 is perfect for 1.4 boxes).  You can do everything from there that you want.

When you are experienced with the chip, mode 4 is awesome.
