Sounds like you are on the right track.  You can always refer to the tutorial in my signature.

As far as being banned from Live, make sure your chip is OFF when you log on, and keep your HD locked.

one more question, how do you set up ftp with computer. have a router and the xbox was assigned an ip address but now how do i set up the ftp so that my computer can see it. I need to back up my hd before updating the evox dash.

Well your not going to see it as a computer in your workgroup (at least with standard setup).  Just boot up and see what IP was assigned to your Xbox, and input that into your ftp program to access your XBox.

There may be EvoX settings that have to be altered first to get your ftp in order.

I recommend doing a search of these forums if you have difficulty with that.  It has been discussed tons.
