Installing New Hd

Hey guys. I have a Chaneleon installed with the X2 4977 bios, but I can't seem to get a boot disk to boot. I tried Slayer's, and a few others, none work. Is it possible to install a new harddrive in my Xbox without using a EvoX boot disk? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
