Boot Disk Fails
« Reply #16 on: September 26, 2003, 05:24:00 PM »

Hey guys. I just got a Chameleon, installed it, flashed the bios with the X2 4977, and when I load up my Xbox it says Xecuter2 instead of MS. Anyway, I had EvoX on my HD before, and that works fine. I am trying to install a new hardrive, so I followed the tuts. and make a EvoX boot disk with a dummy file and when I try to boot I get error 16 with my new HD connected. Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I used Memorex cdrw. (My Xbox reads them 'cuz EvoX says it is a EvoX CD).

Oh ya. I forgot to tell you guys. I also didn't add the new Chameleon settings to EvoX.ini. Does that matter?

Boot Disk Fails

Ok guys, I finally got everything working (including the hard drive swap).  Here's my story.

My xbox dvd drive was NOT able to read any of the CD-RW I put in.  The brands I tried including Sony, Verbatim, Kodak.  None of them works.  So instead, I got a Y power cable and hook up a regular PC DVD rom to the XBox.  I then put in a CD-RW from before, and the Xbox finally booted up!

So onto the hard drive swapping.  I ran into the Error code 16 as well, just like zanderch.  What happened was I swapped in the new hard drive during the evening, and I left the xbox powered off and unplug until the next morning before working on it.

After some googling, I found something about Xbox not able to find the time setting since the old hard drive is no longer there.  So I put the old hard drive back in, and tried booting up with the same EvoX boot disk, and it booted up fine this time.

I then quickly unplugged everything and swapped the new drive back in, booted up using that EvoX boot disk, and I was still able to boot (without the error code 16).  I then proceeded to using raw ftp commands to format my new hard drive (you can find the tutorial on xbox-scene).

Hey dtwc77! I tried what you said but I still have no luck. Could it possibly be because I didn't add the settings for the Cham. in the evox.ini file? Is there any way I can swap HD without having to use a boot disk? Also, I noticed 4 switches on my CHameleon. They are all off. Could that have something to do with it?

I DID IT!!!! Ok. This is what you do.

Update to newest EvoX dashboard (V. 3921). Download the X2 4977 Bios. Open it with Xb Tool. Change the LED colours on the X logo colours if you want. Now, In about the middle of the Xb Tool window, you will see a box that says "Boot Partitions and Executables". Make sure first is evoxdash.xbe, 2nd is nexgen.xbe, third is xboxdash.xbe, and DVD is default.xbe. Now, save that as "LINUXBIO.BIN", then ftp it to the "BIOS" folder on the /C/ partition of the Xbox. Reboot the Xbox. In EvoX, go to System Utilites, Flash Bios, and the LINUXBIO should be in the list. Select it and flash. Your Xbox will shutdown. Turn it back on to make sure it worked. Then, shutdown your Xbox and hook up the new harddrive. Turn on the Xbox. You should get an Error 13. Put in your EvoX bootable (I used the "New HD EvoX" from #Xbins on mIRC). EvoX should boot up after about 2 or 3 restarts. Then just select prepare HD and your good to go. Just ftp your C and E backup.
