It would be nice in the next version, that it would automatically put the MD5 information into the bios.md5 file when flashing a bank or give you the option to add it.

Just my $0.02 worth.

Same here.  If I knew what flash chip they were using, I'd guess it is either installed poorly or somehow hard-wired for read-only access.

I mess around with DishNetwork equipment, whose recievers contain flash roms that are updated via a JTAG interface.  When trying to read from a write-protected chip, all goes fine (as with my Chameleon), but improper device codes are reported when going to program.  That could be the case here.  Either way, there's precious little to be done about it short of RMAing.

EDIT:  You guys getting "BIOS Name: Unknown", are you reading your chip or only scanning?

scanning the chip says Bios: none
reading the banks, Bios: unknown

i already got an RMA and already mailed my chip back.  easybuy2000 was quite quick in getting that RMA number to me (much to my suprise).

also the blue light did blink at the proper times in the programmer. once it was a dim green (i'm pretty sure due to a low 9V battery).

i though i fried my programmer or the chip, because after 6 or 7 times of trying to flash the chip, the computer stopped recognizing the chip altogether.  i rebooted the computer and the chip would still not be detected.  finally it detected the chip again.  then after a couple of times of trying to flash it again (with every bios i could find and tying to flash each bank), i could no longer detect the chip.  it was at this point that i realized i needed an RMA.

I get bios unkown for both scanning and reading the chip. all four md5 codes were the same.

How could flash be unknown when the program can read the flash and detect the different modes the chameleon is in?!

hmmm strange i had 2 chips, one is in a box and worked first go.
this second chip which has not been in a box, has an unknown bios in the first bank? the other 3 are correct, there is something there... becasue it gives a md5.

smile.gif, the metal casing somehow touched the power input and electrocuted the hell out of me. I quit right after that, but I'm gonna try again later. I don't think I'll get the Matrix thing working, so I'll probably pick up some desoldering braid and have this thing fixed in no time.

I just read all four banks of my "unknown flash" chip and all four banks show:
BIOS Name: Unknown
Flash: No
Status: Idle
MD5 :b147ba64fcdca061
       70905c2685e0d72f

do others that get the unknown flash error programming their chip have the same md5 codes as me?

OK, I've tested these on two different PCs with completely different hardware platforms and os's (XP with nForce and 98 with Intel BX). Same results on both.

Chemeleon 1: Doesn't work in xbox
I get the Blue LED flashes on scan, and Unknown Flash error on write.  A "read" shows all my banks as Unknown, and the save creates a blank 256K bios file (ff's).

The MD5 codes on each bank are
ec87a83893ad4d5d
2e97a04644788a55

Chameleon 2: Doesn't work in xbox.
I don't get the Blue LED flashes, ever.  I get the same Unknown on every bank when I "read"...and it too creates a blank 256k bios file, but it doesn't get the same "Unknown Flash" error...it tries to write for a while (status = "Writing") then eventually says: "Error Writing Modul!" (not a typeo).  Same on each bank.  This chip also gets really hot, like its shorting somehow.

The MD5 codes on each bank are
dcc6c7498b07e900
1cd1c35a79b583ed

Anyway...I think they're fubar..so I'll be applying for RMA's soon no doubt.  Hopefully the Unknown Flash error one is just a buggy app, but we'll find out soon I guess.

to sum it up.... Team Xodus made the chameleon with a failure rate that was way too high for a final release.
