I forget where, but there is a tutorial where it says you can download a GiveIO Driver.  Try giving that a shot, since it's not even recognizing your programmer.

Also, I don't know if this matters for the recognization of the chip, but is the battery fresh?

The error after a few bars after beginning the programming usually has to do with the contact.  Typically, if that happens, I will do 1 of 2 things.

1. Make sure the parallel plug is in tight and fit, and then pinch the connection point between the chip and the programmer.  Picture this: Thumb or index finger goes under the area where the 10 gold things stick up (where you insert the chip), and then the thumb or index finger (which ever you didn't use) goes under the little 10 pin box.  Squeeze tight enough to have a nice snug fit.

2. Push everything in a little tighter, step back, and watch and hope.  Number 1 is a more surefire way of being successful, but every one in a while, 2 will work!

Good luck!

Are you using a cable, because it's recommended that you not use a cable to hook up to your parallel port.
Just trying to help narrow it down.

Man I'd be thrilled if I got THAT far... I cant even get winLPC to see the device... no matter what I try.
(Lenghy post in "mod chips" forum) -- I'm fairly certain I have a bad chip and/or programmer. Thats
sucks seeing how difficult it is to get them these days - much less replaced for a good one.

I plan to try again tomorrow in hopes of narrowing down the issue and finding a solution. I'm really hoping to get it working
even though my pessimist side keeps telling me all this is useless because its a bad chip or programmer. But heres what I'm focusing on:
(maybe applies for you?)

1. Battery - although I'm using fresh 9v batteries, I keep reading that you can try using "non-alkaline" or "slightly used" batteries with better luck.

2. PC settings - I've fiddled with the port settings, tried various modes, etc.  Hopefully something I've missed will get this thing flashing.

3. Contacts (pinching) - I really dont think this is my problem.  Ive managed to verify the contacts where the mod chip plugs into the programmer by using a amprobe. I've tested each pin carefuly and have found they all work just fine. I really dont see how pinching this down could help seeing the actual contacts inside the plug clamp to the sides of each pin. But hey - I'm willing to keep trying anything!

4. Software - I've tried winLPC and wmilk - both failing of course. Maybe something else will help? I'm doubtful about that though...

5. PC and OS and Drivers - Ive tried flashing on six PC's so far, using Windows98, Windows 2000, and Windows XP (using the driver). Same results on all of 'em.

Anythign I'm missing?

- Download WMilk from > Link <
- Download GiveIO Drivers from > Link <
- Install it...
- run following from command prompt (where you put wmilk.exe)

wmilk.exe -c -a ffc00000 -v -p <bios image file>
