Well, I'm tired of tampering with the Matrix and my Xbox.  You know my problem (if not read the very first post).  If you feel confident in being able to fix it, I'll sell my Xbox with the Matrix modchip to you.  My AIM is KoPeRoWnZ if you wanna make me an offer, or just post here.  Thanks

I've sent my XBOX to MS, they've asked me 130€ (around 130$) + VAT for repairing it, this may be the cost of a completely new XBOX system. I don't think they repair it, they will just change the mainboard or maybe the whole system!

This is a bit late since you already sent it off, but here was one of my scenerios.  Hardest XBox to modify so far, I only do homebrews...

I installed a modchip and got the blinking red/green.  So I removed the chip, broke the +5v to CE link on the MB, still got the red/green.  Checked all connections, good.

Then I noticed if I lifted the board slightly it would work.  Hmm, so I went ahead and removed all the wires from the board, same results.

So I checked the ground on the chassis of the XBox and it was .170 range, not a very good ground, so I concluded it was a ground.

My guess is that if I powered it on/off originally a bit more I would have found it wouldn't work 100% even before I put in the modchip.  But can't really test that out now.

For some reason if I used certain BIOS on the modchip it would work, must be some timing issue where it waits a bit longer for the chip to enable itself.  You must get ground to CE to enable to chip...

Well right now I got it working using Evox 2.5 Red Logo Error BIOS.  Some BIOS work, others don't.  I think if I wired up a TRUE ground it would work with all the BIOS, the XBox has a floating ground.

Hope this helps someone when they find removing there mod chip still results in failure.

My solution.... I was under the impression that i had a XBOX 1.1 because mine was manufactured after aug 2002. In faxt it was a 1.0. I was putting the WRONG bios version on it. grr.gif  I was using 3.6 when i should have veen using 2.5 or 2.6. I fucked with it for days until i found the link to find out if you have a 1.0 or a 1.1 If the chip next to your cpu has a fan on it, you have a 1.0! I threw a 2.5 colormod on it and i tbooted right up. Installed evoultion x and im on my way. Give it a try..cant hurt!  jester.gif

Ok everybody,

Status update:

I have had 3 machines to date that show the on/off, on/off, on/red=green flashing.

I have sucessfully recovered one of them.

I use header pins in all of my installations and with the one that I recovered, i heated the pins on the underside of the board and wiggled the header on the top of the board untill I could see it wiggle a bit from the bottom.  The board was upside down when I did this to help the hot solder run down the eyelet.  I even turned pin 3 slightly.  I must have gotten a better connection because it works now.

The first bad one needs rework for sure because the eyelet of the 3rd lpc point is gone from fiddling with it so much.  I will get this repaired and update after.

The other one is really strange.  All the points are clean. I even removed the header pins to see if some traces were messed up.  Everything looks really clean and almost factory with the pins removed.  Still no boot.  I tried the heat and wiggle trick but it did not work on the board.

Here is the strange thing. The machine that I had recovered and the one that doesnt have the broken eyelet, both were chipped last night one after the other.  They both had the same probem.

I am working on wood floors at a wooden desk with no metal anywhere. I think I am pretty safe from ESD.  I am really puzzled to why this happened. I think it may be some grounding issue.

Also to note, I didn't plug up the boxes to test before I chipped them.  I am mentioning that because I know that the xbox will have some residual power in it for a bit but these had been off for 1/2 day so it is really strange what happened to both machnes.  From now I will be powering them on just before I chip them as I know that with no residual power I am 1 for 3.

Thank Goodness I was able to recover one.  Ill keep everyone updated with this and hope that this may save somebodys machine.

None here has replyed correctly to you here.... You must have shorted a resister, most likey 215. look on the bottom side of the board close to where the power connects from top side.  when you were putting in the matrix you shorted it either by ground or by the LPC's. if its ground then it can be fixed by replacing the resisters... if its LPC... your fucked.

QUOTE (brainlight @ Dec 12 2002, 04:28 PM)
Yeah, the damn same thing happened to me, the difference is that i'm not a 12year old guy that installs for the first time a modchip, i'm been modifiying consoles from 5 years now, and i'm a student of electronic engineering, so I KNOW what I was doing when i've installed the matrix. I've tried to install the damn chip but XBOX wonted power up, probably for miss-alignement.

Suddendly, the matrix starts to burn, releasing a nasty gray smoke, and a track of it has blown up (see the pictures here ). Scared, I removed the matrix from the XBOX and....surprise! it didn't want to boot, even without matrix installed.... I've tried everything, but I suppose that some IC of the mainboard has blown up. Don't believe me? Watch the pictures here:

Now i'm talking with them because I want a full refund of the damages made from the chip to my xbox, I didn't see any disclaimers when i've buyed the chip, so they have to pay me!

HA, from the pictures that i see. you shorted it by ground... your dumb ass let the washer run loose and it hit other resisters (the yellow one... i dont remember the name of it). You should have known better then leaving it on and then letting the washer dance.

I just bought another xbox today cuz I had that problem flashing red.  My brother knocked it down on the ground about 3 feet two days ago.  Anyway I'll try that ground stuff if I can figure it out.  Funny thing is I did the backup of serial of hd, etc.  But I threw my 120GB and it booted and everything just fine with all my games, etc.  Using Matrix Evox D.6 Eject Fix BIOS with lastest EVox Dashboard. Guess I don't need that 200GB I just bought today after all.  Maybe I'll sell that xbox to my brother for cheapo and let him fix it.

Why did you buy a 200gig? Thought 136gigs was the max it could read.

whats the story with resistor 215?

if that is blown would it cause the box to on/off 3 times without the chip or do installed?

Same thing happend to me .. Everything worked great, i took out the matrix to flash another bios on it ( for whatever reason ), it never worked again. 3 times on off Green / Yellow blinkage. ( might be Green / Red after connecting the AV adapter i dont know exactly ).
I guess i must have somehow damaged the board. god knows how.
