I'm sorry, but I can't figure out exatly what you are talking about here.  Maybe some pics or something would help out.  And by screws, do you mean the cable connectors for the LPT port?  B/C not all programmers come with those on there.  If I get what you are saying right, you are using the two connectors like a nut and bolt; just like the bolt-on guide.

The simplest solution everyone should try first is the #6 x 1/2" screw; it's been tested by many people and it's worked for them.  I have yet to hear from someone who's tried this and it not work.

I stripped the screw and had to replace it with a bolt, machine screw method.  It worked very well for me, got it aligned in about 20 minutes once it was installed.
