well...from my experience with that evil little chip...is if you don't have something on that side of the chip to help level it out...when you screw it down...the chip tends to pull up on the opposite side giving an extremely loose connection to the pogos on that side.  alot of times, when i screwed the matrix down, and the alignment (mode 1) was thrown off...if i pushed a little on the opposite side from the screw...it was aligned again.  it's easier to use the space and find a longer screw.
