I wonder if the reason i cant get a green light is because a component on the xbox motherboard is screwed (like a chip or something). could this cause no green light on the matrix?

if the thing won't boot when its put together completely without the chip, then there's a good chance something on the motherboard is fried

Well  mine one got the same problems as the one you got, I give up on trying to make it to work again with my Matrix. But there is a Trick to return them back to the place where you bought it from.
I can't help when you order from the Net, But if you buying from the Local Video Game Store, you will able to return them back. follow this Instruction.
1. Go the The Store buy the New Xbox.
2. You need Hair Blow ( Hair Dryer) that the girl used it most of the time.
3. You need to heat the both sticker that where your screw is under there, When it got hot it's easy for you to open that sticker from the New Xbox, after you done that you will able to used the new Sticker from the new one and put on your old one.
4. Do a bit clean up on your old one and try to pack it back to the Box and return it back ask for refund or change for something else. just give them the Reason, The good Store to buy is from if you in Australia go to Electronic.... BT or K-Mart even Harvey Norman Will do.
-=REMEMBERS=- USED IT FOR YOUR OWN RISK. 95% they will refund it back for you. if you good at it :0

Just today I installed a matrix switch (consisting of 2 toggle switches). Before I powered on the xbox for the 1st time after installing the switches, I made sure with both original switches in the off position, and i set my toggles in mode 3. I turned on the Xbox and both the red and green LED's on the chip flashed on at the same time and i got no picture or sound but a SOLID GREEN light on the front of the xbox. I immediately turned it off, and removed the switches, and returned the original switch to mode 3. When I turned on the Xbox for the 2nd time, the xbox would still turn on without picture or sound with a SOLID GREEN light on the front. For the 3rd try, I totally removed the Matrix chip and powered on the xbox with the same results. I then thought I had definately messed up the onboard TSOP and the flash on the Matrix too, so i reflashed the chip successfully and tried to install it, but now matter how the chip is adjusted while in the original Mode 1, the light will never turn green. After that failed, I noticed that no matter what mode the chip is in BESIDES MODE 1, even if it is not aligned correctly, its LED will turn green as if it is functioning. I own 2 matrix chips and all of these results happed with both of them

another update - even when the dvd rom and hard drive are connected the eject button wont work , it just makes a weird clicking sound and the front light flashes for a few seconds the turns solid again. Ideas?

This SOLID GREEN light on the front of the box, is that the one around the eject button?  I would say check your video cable settings first because you should be getting something on screen if the modchip is removed.  If something is broken, the light usually flashes alternating red and green.  It will flash alternating yellow and green if the video cable is not plugged in.

Does the chip flash red in mode 1 when you try to get it aligned?  If its not flashing at all in mode 1 even when its somewhat close to proper alignment, the chip is broken.  When you get closer to proper alignment it will flash bright red.

The LED will always turn green in any other mode except mode 1 regardless of whether the chip is aligned properly.  This is normal.

Did you install these switches while the matrix was installed in the xbox?

I wouldn't give up yet...but if you decide to try on a new box...I don't know of any honest ways of returning the one you have.  You might be able to sell it on the forum though.

M@verick:

Yes, i am referring the the light around the eject button

I have tested both the RCA (red, whiten yellow) and a HDTV pack i bought, and neigher give any picrue or sound.

As, you said, yes the chip does flash off and on red in mode 1 when trying to install it.. and gets stronger when you get closer to having them aligned. The problem is never getting a green light in mode 1 no matter how well i adjust it. It was easy to install the first time i put it in i remember.

Yes i did solder the wires to the matrix while it was still connected to the xbox.

ALSO: what is with the dvdrom not ejecting?

anything else you can think of? anyone?

I had major troubles getting my chip in after soldering a switch to it.  It took me like 2 days to get it aligned.  My big problem was that my ground wires were soldered to the screw point.  Everytime I screwed it down, it would shift.  It took me about 2 days to get it right.  I never tried installing without a switch so I really have no basis for comparision.

Thats strange that you can't get a green LED at all in mode 1.   The only reason I could think was that the traces on the board are corroded.  Make sure you have a clean trace on all those points. If not put a drop of solder on there.  Also rub down all the pogo pins with rubbing alcohol and clean them off thoroughly.
