Matrix Losing Its Bios...
« on: December 01, 2002, 11:50:00 PM »

I am having the same damn problem. It all started about 1 week ago when i switched to mode 4 to use Xflash to flash the chip from EVOX2.5 to X2. It worked fine so i left it there. Couple days later i got that same crap, error 5!!! So i reflashed my chip using the programmer and set it back to mode 2, tested it, it worked great until i put the cover back on my XBOX and fired it up again ..... guess what ERROR 5!!!!!!!! WTF ?!?!!? I've tried this with 2 different Matrix chips and they both do the same thing!!! I dunno what the hell is going on anymore i've done everything, reflashed, realligned, cleaned contacts with alcohol, used longer screw ... nothing works !!!!! If anybody out there knows what's going on let US know!!

the official Matrix manual doesn't suggest leaving the modchip in mode 4 because a bad flash can occur......What? LOL, how can you get a bad flash without even flashing it? Sorry guys, that is weird.

I would suggest leaving it in mode 3, and when you want to flash, take apart Xbox, set matrix to mode 4, flash using Evo dash, set matrix to mode 3, and then put Xbox back together. It is a freaken hassle, but if you don't flash alot, its not a big deal.

Maybe it's just losing alignment; this is the most common issue with the Matrix.

Try a longer screw; I had the same problems and this worked for me.

I recommend a #6 x 1/2" sheet metal screw

Not really no. Matrix has been known to give wrong LED signs in some modes. Good test for alignment is swith between all 4 modes and see if the LED does each time what you expect. If it does, it should be properly aligned, if not...bad alignment.

If any of you have the same "disappearing" bios again, maybe could you all do as a favour? Take the chip out put it on the programmer, plug it to the PC and use WinLPC to read the bios file. Check this file with bios version checker. This should  verify and clarify for once and for all if the bios is really overwritten or if it is just alignment.

PS I have some ideas of designing an additional tool to keep the matrix in place. I will post these as soon as I have the time.

It does say don't run in mode 4 all the time ( iam ).

Well, yeah I know that... its just that I knew I'd want to flash it thru EvoX sometimes, thats why I left it to mode 4... I will flash the latest X2 (4973) and leave it on mode "can't-recall-#-but-always-on-read-only"

I do think its alignement though... would be weird to see a ROM chip getting erased by itself...

Maybe my XBOX has a virus... is there a version of Norton Antivirus for XBOX out yet  biggrin.gif

Just kidding !

If it is an alignment issue eventhough the light is stable green it's going to be fun trying to align it correctly!!!!

Been running my Matrix on Mode 3 (reset/eject to disable mod) for about two months now on my v1.0 April 2002 with the EvoX 2.5 superfr0 err.noani.nologo BIOS. Not one complaint. Just FYI.

after reading all the responses and having the same thing occur i would like to say the following.

I left my mod in write enable and started off with evox2.5 no problems till i installed xecuter 4972 final

then my machine would power up/down/up/down then up and sit at the X screen

i tried all modes... all the led flashing patterns were correct.

i removed the mod and re-aligned it and restarted. still same problem.

i removed the chip and reflashed it with xecuter 4972 final
and reinstalled leaving it in write mode. all is well...

then it reverts back to the previous condition.

my conclusion: there is some errant code either in the evox dash when combined with 4972 final which causes corruption or in 4972 final itself.

until this problem has been conclusively solved i have left my chip flashed with xecuter 4973 (it came out the day i was completing my observations and once working cbfd testing) and in the always on mode.

no ill effects.

and it is not misalignment. i replaced my original screw at first installation to get a tighter and more secure fit and before these problems ever surfaced i had transported my xbox several times with no misalignment

my 2c worth

Garg. Just solder the damn thing down, use some wires. Then, you know the friggin' thing can't come out of alignment.
It's not too hard to solder (the first time I soldered was with the OpenXBox on my very own XBox), it just seems hard, what with all the horror stories we all hear.
