I don't know that much about winxp, but, i do know that if you are not logged into an account that has all the permissions set to yes, some things won't work, and this sounds like one of them.

Also, there is a prog you have to download in order to use the wmilk / winlpc with XP.

                                    True, you need tu run a proggie. I believe it's called "Give I/O".

I would try and find it at the usual places.

Could anybody let me know if this is legal to distribute? And if yes, can't w add it to X-S?
