I was curious about this, since rev1.1 of their install manual says to use tape to secure the washer which would prevent the connection to ground.  This also means that something like a rubber, plastic, or any other insulating washer could be used between the matrix and mobo (if you are really worried about the metal washer slipping out of place and causing a short circuit).
