Aladdin Advance Xt Installation Tutorial

Well, catdog2 replied to my questions on the thread.  As it turns out, this is even easier than I thought.  If you cut the single trace, you don't need a resistor, or a grounded Lframe since this config is "always on".  The current you are running though your xbox is scary if you don't do this.

Here is the diagram:

I have redone my Aladdin install this way.  This is the procedure for a safe "always on" install.  This works great!  Remember to remove that Lframe ground wire from that first install though.....

The trace isn't that hard to cut, I used a razor blade, but in the future I'll be using a good exacto knife.  If the tutorial is updated with this material, I see no reason why this shouldn't be made a sticky.  Your tutorials are the most precise, and easy to follow that I've seen.  Trust me, I went though alot of garbage trying to find good information.

Or else we'll just have to keep bumping it.  lol!

I've got a v1.6b sitting here that I'm going to test that out on Firebaall. I assume that you still have to connect the LFrame to the modchip though right?

So...

1) Rebuild LPC
2) Cut LFrame trace
3) Connect LFrame to D0 on modchip

Sound about right? No need for BT or any other connections?

No need for any Lframe connections at all.

1) Solder the male header pins into the Xbox LPC port
2) Connect the BT connection on the modchip to the LPC connection #2 on the modchip. This is essentially the same thing as connecting BT to ground.
3) Rebuild the Xbox LPC port according to this diagram - but don't strap D0 (LFrame in diagram) to ground
4) Cut the single Lframe trace on the topside of the motherboard
5) Put the modchip on the header pin and that's it!

I stole the step by step from your tut.  A clean, simple and safe "always on" install!  I edited out the text in the yellow box.  It could have been misunderstood.  All the picture is there for, is to show the location for the trace cut.

hmm,... just tried it out with a v1.6b and it doesn't seem to want to work. Just to clarify one thing... you don't connect the D0 (modchip or xbox mobo) to anything right? Just rebuild the LPC, cut the trace and strap BT (on the modchip) to ground? Am I missing something?

Right, no connection to the D0 tab on the mod chip, and no grounding the Lframe on the Motherboard.  Double check your cut with an ohm meter.  I noticed that the trace that you have to cut can be stubborn.  If you don't cut that trace, the modchip can't turn on.

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, but I haven't had a chance to mess around with it until tonight.

After messing around with it for awhile, I found out that it was actually a defective modchip! I haven't had one of those for awhile! I knew it wasn't the trace (as I had used a multi-meter to make sure there was no continuity), but I thought it may have been a bios issue, but I swapped SST chips with a known working modchip and it still didn't help.

Anyway, got it up and running and it seems to work just fine. I snapped some more pics and I'll probably edit the tutorial tonight and fire it off to aladdin64 to update. I'm also going to edit the first post to remove the GeoCities link - has it is pretty much useless. Thanks again for the help!

Cheers! beerchug.gif

Good tut, but you should have a picture of the alternate BT & L1 thats located at the bottom side of the motherboard. To many people seems to fry those resistors when they try to solder BT & L1 and i think it could be good for them to use the alternate spots.

Can you please tell me where I can get a pic showing these alt. points?

Thanks

I bougth chips from a guy who gave me different instructions...

the installation picture for xenochip shows L1: R3G2...   BT :R3G6
his chip shows:                                    L1: R3G2      BT :R3G8....

and the position of r3g2 is even different.. is his instructions wrong or is this another version of XT??  uhh.gif

edit here are the instructions I got but I think either it's a different chip or the manual is wrong..

This picture is big so I just past link,
http://www.xepzone.s...din4064V162.jpg

As you see the diagram seems to be wrong, also it's a diffeent chip on the diagram.. either the picture is wrong or he has sold me non XT chip  uhh.gif

What about for non v1.6 xboxes.  For the always on method is it exactly the same without the need to cut a trace?  If so that would be great  smile.gif

Thanks!

For a non v1.6 xbox, just install the header and strap D0 to ground for an 'always on' install. It doesn't come much easier than installing one of these chips in an older version xbox. It's pretty straight-forward, but I'll probably end up adding a section in the tutorial for these as well - just to help save a lot of questions.

For straping D0 to ground can I just jump D0 to LPC connection #2 or is this not ground on older Xboxes?  And BT is just left unconnected?

Thanks!

You could, but it would be pointless. You have to connect D0 on the motherboard to ground. So you're better off connecting the D0 (on the mobo) to ground on the mobo - that way you can simply slide the modchip on/off of the header if need be. In case you're not sure what might be ground - any of the screw holes on the mobo are grounded.

uhoh... the customer has just dropped off that v1.6b that I did above (with the always on mod) and apparently it is having the same problem that I was initially having (that led me to believe that it was a faulty modchip).

Apparently when you boot the xbox up with the power button, there is no video. This happens about 4 out of 5 times he said. But if you power up the xbox with the eject button, then it seems to work fine (although he said that the dvd tray wouldn't close once - very strange).

I know the 'no video' problem is a v1.6b/bios problem, but I've got a M8plus_16 bios flashed to the chip.

I'll mess around with this xbox tonight when I get home from work and see if I can figure this out. I think I had an Aladdin Advance v32 in this machine originally and it worked just fine, but I ended up putting an AladdinXT in so I could snap some pics for the tutorial. Maybe it's an issue with the XTs? I dunno,... just speculating. I'll see what I can find tonight and I'll post an update...
