Using Aladdin Live Programmer
« on: September 16, 2004, 12:35:00 PM »

I saw a lot of questions and very little answers on this topic.  Found the answers in a variety of places, on other modchips and other forums.  I think I made every single mistake so if you follow this step by step, you should be ok.

1) Get the programmer software from www.aladdinlive.com

2) Restart your computer and go to the BIOS (F1,F5, Delete...watch the bottom of your screen at the beginning of startup and it should tell you what to do)

3) Go to your parallel port setting.  Make sure it is 1. enabled and 2. set to EPP mode.  Then write down the default IO address.

4) Open the programmer program.  Click on setup and type in that default address, click ok.

5) Now set up the programmer: attach the programmer to the chip so that they overlap as little as possible (there's only two orientations...).

If your programmer came with a wire soldered to pin 25, tape that wire to the BT solder plate on the chip.  Some people don't have that wire and it works fine.  But if you've done everything and your chip still isn't detected, try to connect those two points.

6) Plug the whole setup into the parallel port.

7) Plug in the USB cable for power.

Now THAT is not intuitive at all, and Aladdin offers no instructions, but I think that's everything you need to know.

i programmed the aladdin live with the programmer, i didn't  place any wire or tape and it worked fine and flashed the M8 on it with no problems
just set the parallel port from your pc's bios to EPP and place the chip onto the pinheader on the programmer chip and connect the usb cable, plug it into your parallel port and plug in the usb into the pc and run the program and it should work, that's all i needed to do.

1.) it took me about a half hour to do the flash.  Give or take.  It was a long time.

2.) My programmer came with a wire soldered to pin 25.  Until I taped that pin to the BT plate, it couldn't recognize my chip.  When I made the attachment, it went super smooth.  I don't know why mine came with a wire and other people's didn't, but that was the missing piece in my equation.

WOH, half an hour to program a 256KB flash ?!?!

I reflashed my Super Aladdin Live from the xbox and it only took like a minute or less. I flashed TSOP on older xboxes, the timing is roughly the same. Luckily I didn't buy the programmer

for me it didn't detect the chip on the programmer until i set the 3-digit LPT number for my port 1 (which is usually either 378 or 278. thanx, aladdin for letting us know that. not). once i put that in, it showed up immediately. i didn't have any other wire besides the usb cable, so i never used any other.

now i've got a 1.6 xbox which i accidently flashed with an older bios. didn't work, so i reflashed it with the m8 1.6 bios. still doesn't work. when i flashed the chip this time, it failed the verify part as soon as the writing was over. didn't fail before. i don't know any other bioses that work with a 1.6 xbox. any ideas?
