Xbox Won't Boot On First Try
« on: September 29, 2003, 03:04:00 PM »

If my XBOX has been off for a few hours, it won't boot up on the first try. When I try to turn it back on [via either the eject or power button], it stalls during bootup and only gets as far as the XBOX logo [no MS logo]. The whole time, the light ring around the eject button blinks green.

Some further info on what happens when I boot/attempt to boot:

First Try:
- Power button: Green LED around Eject button blinks continuously.
- Eject button: As above.

Second Try:
- Power button: Green LED comes on, does not blink.
- Eject button: Green LED comes one, blinks several time as the tray opens, then stays on.

Again, I'm wondering if there's some kind of error in the bootup process or the BIOS. I'm really stumped why it won't boot on the first go, but works fine on the second.

PLEASE HELP! sad.gif

I generally dislike the practise of "bumping" a thread, but I'm disappointed that no-one has even tried to help me here. Even a push in the right direction would be appreciated.

It's not modded, never has been. It may be naive or stupid to suggest it, but I wondered if the BIOS was to blame. *IF* it was, then maybe a mod [and therefore new BIOS] would fix it. I'm basically looking to justify the cost of a mod [I'm mostly broke].

Here is a bit of justification maybe.  A mod is really the only way you can troubleshoot it.  if you had a mod you could try out another hard drive, rebuilt from the ground up.  It sounds like something is dieing on that xbox if its the bios or the hard drive, a mod can help.  Otherwise you are moding as a form of troubleshooting and mods are pretty cheap.

This isn't caused by something having died or started dying, because I've had this problem since I got my XBOX in April last year and it hasn't gotten any worse.

Before you say it, I know I should've gotten it fixed while it was under warranty. Well I'm lazy and I didn't bother, so now I have to suffer the costs of repair. So no lectures please... tongue.gif

I just had a thought about the various error codes - how soon after powering on should these appear? I could try leaving my XBOX for a couple of minutes to see if anything happens, but I don't think anything will...

Edit - further info:

DVD Drive: Thomson.
Manufacture Date: March 2002.
Version: 1.0 [based on the kernel version, as explained here].

Again I must push this thread to the front page, I still haven't had any real help, despite over 100 people viewing this thread. dry.gif

I don't really know what your problem is, however no-one else has any suggestions  tongue.gif

The green LED blinks when the DVD is trying to read a disk - like when you put a game in.  I'm wondering if there is a problem with your DVD drive (or harddrive)? If you know someone else with a xbox, you could try using their DVD drive to see if the problem still continues (direct swap).  You could also try a different harddrive, but this will require a modchip to swap easily and is not a direct swap from another xbox.

I'm not much help though...  huh.gif

It seems to be a common trend amongst the few replies I've gotten, I might have to take it to someone to check out for me.

I'd hope it's a HDD problem - because it'd be replaced in the course of modding anyway. Though I guess getting a new [and not a Thomson] DVD drive would be nice also.

Today I left it sitting where it stalls and eventually I got the Error 13 screen...
