30k/sec Ftp Transfer Rate. Is This Normal?
« Reply #15 on: June 18, 2003, 11:50:00 AM »

I'll have to check it when I get home. I found a bunch more archived posts relating to network problems and it is almost laughable how many different solutions people have found. So I am going to:

1. Turn of my firewall software
2. Try several different ftp programs including CuteFTP and FlashFXP
3. Run network optimization software/optimize registry
4. Try using cable that came with the drive
5. New/different network card
6. Test new hard drive on the PC make sure it works fine
7. Purchase multiport switch/router with built in DHCP server
8. Purchase different hard drive
9. Throw in the towel and accept defeat

I do ALOT of modding, and usuly plpo in 80gig drives, so game backupsare sent form xbox to xbox. some xbox's go at 800k some got at 5mb/s. using all the same cables. I can't explain it, I assume it's the ftp prog on the xbox side...maybe it dont like certain xboxs...even though they all the same but ya. I can leave it and come a hour later and it's sending at a few mb/s. No real exmplaination i've found so far. My network is 100mbit through a cisco 677 router. for my xbox I upload to it at 5-7mb/s and when I send from xbox to PC I get 11mb/s:) but some friends xbox's go at 800-900k/s. And they xbox never gets better...I'm not sure what to say. Maybe try a diff type of ftp server/client on the xbox. only guess i got, but still dont make much sence. I'm a certified network admin...TCP/IP with M$ all that....nothing really adds up. one v1.0 xbox goes at 800k and u take another v1 xbox made on the same assembly line and on same network and goes at 6mb/s. dont make much sence. Either xbox dont like the upgraded HD(if u have one) or xbox dont like xbox software. Are my educated guesses but i have no evidence for any of this. Havent fond a answer for this situation since xecuter1(I pre-orderd mine year+ ago) and since then...no hard fix...just fool, reboot...leave for a few hours...anywho...if u find the answer i would like to know:)

A few of my friends and I experimented with this a while back. A lot of times people have the default gateway set so that the xbox broadcasts out of their internet connection and then recieves it that way. They are limited by their upload limit. We figured this out because my friend can upload at about 150kilobytes/s. This was what the xbox was receiving at. We unplugged the cable modem from the network, re ftp'd and the speed went up to 4 megabytes a second. That's how we figured that out. A fix for us was to set the default gateway as the router's ip.

Fixed my problem too.  Found out the problem was Smart FTP.  When I used WS_FTP I got very fast speeds again.  someone said by default I need to change the I/O buffer in Smart from 8-2MB but I have not tired that yet.  After all the worries of a hd problem it all came down to me tring out a new program.  Wish I had not wasted the time reopening and switching by 80pin cable back.
I guess both of our stories have a happy ending.

Hi:

I have too an extrange problem.

With original HD or an Seagate ST340810A (40Gb) the speed is:

XBOX -> PC  22Mpbs (in FlashFXP... because this is impossible... but really quick)
PC -> XBOX 12 Mbps

Now I put a really silent SAMSUNG SV6003H (60Gb) and now:

XBOX -> PC 8Mbps
PC -> XBOX 2Mbps

The Seagate 40 and the SAMSUNG 60 are both UltraDMA-100 capable.

I tested it in my XBOX v1.0 with Evolution X, crossover cable... in the same moment! simply switching the disk.

Ah! Both disks were tested in PC and the Samsung is slightly slower BUT NOT SO MUCH!

Anybody understand this?

Thanks
