If I was in the predicament, I'd wanna know the best possible way to tackle the situation. I've never had to desolder a pin header out of the LPC holes (I shoulda been a little more spceific) and was wondering what is the best course of action.

If using a x2 I'd personally use the wire method, since it's pretty easy and less dangerous than desoldering the lpc.

Thats cool, whatever floats! Me!? I just want some feedback on this subject. wink.gif

The first xbox I did, I tried to use a copper wick.... took AGES!!!!
the second Xbox I did, I bought a little bulb from my local drugstore.. it's supposed to do something to your ear??? I forget what exactly.. It was $2.50
Eitherway, it looks a bit like a rubber turkey baster... a round bulb you depress, with a tube on the end...
Makes it VERY easy to remove the solder.. just heat it up from one side, depress the bulb, and suck the solder out...
either that, or by a de-solderer... it's SOOO easy...

To actually remove a pin header from the LPC port you'll be hard pressed to get desoldering braid to work without damaging your board.

I would look at Radio Shack for this product: Desoldering Pump    Have a buddy help you with the pump so that you can hold the soldering iron and he can push the pump button.

Desoldering takes almost 100 degrees more heat than soldering (because other parts are drawing more heat away) and you want to minimize the amount of time you're spending heating your board/components that much.  If you're having trouble, take a break and let the board cool down before you go at it again.  You want to keep the heat local, and get in and out as quickly as possible.

Cleaning up with braid is a good idea, but to do the whole desoldering job with it is risky and time consuming.

comming from someone that is new to soldering..
(have done plenty of tsop flashes..but thats the extent..no 7 wires..)

Because I have never done more than 2 wires...(at least I can do the D0)
I was affraid of doing 7 (even though those holes are huge compared to D0)
So I was going to use a braid with my 15w to install the pin header..figuring the pin header would be easiest to install..

however I couldn't get ONE of the holes even close to empting.. this is me though.. being affraid of leaving it there too long.. and lifting a ring or whatever (don't know what could happen but didn't care)
I was affraid of spreading if it was going to work.. thought it would flow over to another point causing all kinds of problems..

Anyway.. I did the wire install with filled holes and did it VERY fast!  it was soooo much easier than the pin header.
The solder flowed great together..

The pin header is great for people who might need to take it out.. or something.. but for ease.. if your lpc holes are filled.. use the wires.

just my experience.

If you're trying to remove solder from the LPC holes (assuming you haven't installed a mod chip yet), it's simple! Use a wick (de-soldering braid) and a good soldering iron set to a fairly high temperature, and it'll pick the solder right up.

If you're trying to remove the pin headers, it's a bit more difficult. Each time you put solder on a board, it becomes more difficult to remove it because you have to raise the temperature each time. The more you mess with the solder, the higher the temperature you need to remove it. Too high of a temperature and you'll damage the board. Take your time when doing this, I fully recommend using the wick and good soldering iron method, but just be careful!

If you have an Xbox board with pre-filled holes but you want to fit a header, try desoldering it this way:-

Remove board, wedge it or rest it vertically somehow
Locate LPC connection on both sides of the board, so you know where you are  smile.gif
Apply soldering iron to one LPC hole on one side of board
Apply desolder pump to same hole on other side of board, press button
Repeat above for rest of holes
Check for stray bits between holes, mop them up with the soldering iron

Holes should now be ready to take the header.

i did a solder removal/pin header install yesterday, i got tired of my lpc wires breaking off of bad solder joints, so i just said "fuck it" i already had a solder vaccum, so i just did the lpc points one by one, took me like 20 mins, easy as pie, but tedious as hell, then the pin header just slipped on and viola, the solder stuck to those pins on the header really well, and it was back and running in less then 3 mins.
