as long as the tip is small enough it should be fine. Just don't be tempted to leave the iron on for to long and lift the tracks.

Just a quick question. Would it be possible to use a 12 watt soldering iron to solder a X2? Just asking because everywhere I have looked suggests a 15 watt.

Thanks for your time

It should definitely do the trick.   I read that someone had a problem with removing the solder from the LPC points with a 12watt but it should do just fine for soldering on wires and the like.

Even with removing the solder, it should do fine with a solder sucker.   With a braid there is some loss of heat through the braid but I would still think it would get hot enough to melt the solder through the braid.

I had problems with a 15w and solder braid . Lpc points are plated through the board with makes them harder ro desolder with braid.

I have installed a few pin headers on a 1.0 and the 15watt iron worked very well for most of them.  Like you said, a couple of them were hard to get all the solder out of with the braid and the 15watt iron but it worked.  I would imagine a 12 watter would still work but might be more trouble than it is worth.

It was a 1.1 i had problems with. had the old red/green problem so  removed the pin header to check  for shorts . That was a nightmare with a 15w and braid.

Yeah, probably more difficult with the pin header pins in the way than plain holes filled with solder.   But obviously doable... but not desirable. wink.gif

12W is what I use, and it damn near impossible to mess up the motherboard with a 12W, you can't burn the board with it, etc..

Anyone have any links to some 15 or 12 watt irons?  They must have small tip though.  I know radioshack has them but is there anywhere else online?
