Who cares about live content?

Nobody is going to host it for free. If they did, it would be extremely illegal, and very traceable.  Go get your content in the usualy places or keep your copy of live.  However, hosting custom content (maps custom made cars etc) could open up a whole kickass custom scene.

I think it would boil down to this:

1. You could build a front end for the live system to be able to point to a specific live server, Maybe include it in a save game hack or something.
2. Build a pc (linux and windows) application to host the 'emulated' live server that will allow a set number of hosts to connect/play at one time.  I have heard that when people host a game it is not hosted on the live server for the most part anyway so..
3. Post a listing of active servers and bandwidth/pings on the web (or maybe even p2p???, die you riaa scum!!)

whats the real bandwidth cost?

And look at all the halflife public servers.  If someone builds the front end, someone else who has tons of bandwidth to spare will host it.

However i am no software expert,

but I know that reverse engineering an already existing server is not just illegal (bnetd) but also very difficult to add all of the existing options etc.  However i think it would be a very sweet addition to the scene.

You were able to get what?
The dash and your pc to talk, great.  Now just to get the software that is on the LIVE servers, and recreate it.  My guess is, this a little different for every game, so it would be a continuous   project.  All this while not violating any laws, and without a few million dollars.  I say, if you want LIVE, pay for LIVE.

Oh, I am sorry ... I fail to see that part where I care about that !
..............
I have a wife, Kids, Job and a car. I enjoy gaming, I lead a full life.
Believe it or not, I do have better things to do.

Then WTF are you going on about?  You started a discussion on how LIVE could be recreated, dont get upset becuase someone has simply told you that you arent going to be able to do it.  If you dont want to have a reasonable discussion, then dont bother posting at all.  smile.gif

Why not create a NEW 3rd party XBOX Live system, but use host files or port redirection to point to the new server.

It would open up a whole host of possibilities.
NO Blocked Xbox's (even if previously blocked by M$)
Offer Live content updates as per M$

I took this as a personal attack on my intellect as to even think someone thought I would try to offer a world-wide alternative to the M$ system. I just aint that stupid.

That is all, and I will leave you to discuss the not-so-available service that you dont really want to create, just talk about.  wink.gif

Its too bad this thread had to degenerate.  If people wouldn't get upset about double posting i would repost without all the bs.  The idea and theory is pretty sound.  Reverse engineering can be done, even with encrypted data.  I have watched many server emulators be put up (bnetd, everquest, ultima online)  You can't blanket something and say it CAN'T be done.  You can give reasons why its improbable.  I know people would run the server, oc3's run game servers all the time for what ever reason.  There were some REALLY quick BNETD servers which i played the hell out of WC3 on.  Anyway even if its a really crappy idea, in your opinion, there is no reason for personal attacks or to say your idea is dumb.

Just for the record - I never made a personal attack, or called the idea dumb, I simply pointed out several.... 'flaws' if you will, with the general plan.  I dont doubt that it COULD be done, I am simply questioning the likelihood of creating a reliable pay service that would emulate LIVE.

I mean, the whole point of LIVE is that it isnt just peer-to-peer gaming.  Its one large 'community'.  You mentioned programs like xbconnect, which you have to admit is completely different.  In that case, there are actual xbox's that are capable of hosting games.  Such is not the case w/ live.
As for offering downloadable content, I think this brings in the serious possibilty of legal problems.  That content is not yours to distribute.
Which brings us to what it all comes down to:
Why would someone pay for something like your service, when they could pay for live, get reliable service, extra content for games, and tech support.  The only answer I have seen so far is, so you can play your pirated games in a LIVE environment.  And of course there is the 'becuase we can' thing tongue.gif

Dont get me wrong, I am not trying to 'attack your intellect', or insult you at all, it just seems that you are overlooking very key stumbling blocks.

I wish you well in trying to do it, and maybe a few more people will step up to help out  biggrin.gif

Sounds Great but, the downloadable content is impossible. Even if you were able to attach the serial # eeprom bs to get it to work, the files are still copyrighted. And I know that M$ would have copyrighted something critical. And being run on a main server, it could be taken down.

Now If you could get a P2P XB Live 3rd party thing..........LOL

Do you mean "Pay for Live" as in M$ version (Huh?, not THAT RICH)
or if this server does work, change a fee to cover real FAST HOSTING?

wink.gif  is just $50 a year or $5 month , youre that poor ,

GET A FRICKING JOB!!!!!

seriously get a paper delivery job or a part time job,
cause if you want to play on that Server you got to have broadband or the game will lag like hell. and if you get broadband why not drop $50 extra a year.  wink.gif

yeah, the downloadable content may be a problem, but the Splinter Cell addon actually got released on the Xbox Magazine Cover DVD. It need some looking into but perhaps it may be viable after all.

Your right on the Live servers doing NOT A WHOLE LOT, Ive now got games being hosted on my own server and have tested using 3 Xbox's so far. 2 MOD'd and 1 Standard. All using the standard M$ Dash.

Its not the license fee that I have the issue with, when it comes to Live.

1. Its the price of the original games
2. Its the rumours about Kids fucking about on there that spoils it for me.

Damned if I want to spend £30 on a game to play on live, just for it to be spoilt by a spotty teenager with a mental  imbalance.
Total waste of Money !

BTW, I "RUN" the IT Department for a local government funded company with 8000 users and 16000 items of equipment.
I have MCSE+I (NT4 + 2000) and MSCD status.
I don't need another job or need to justify myself to anyone else, this is just for fun and to see what IS possible with a little time and effort.

how did you host the games? i got it only that far that the xbox was "thinking" my home computer would be an official live server but not any further.

It would still be great for hosting games with small groups of friends over the internet. That wouldn't require too much bandwidth at all if the voice stuff wasn't in use.
