Unfortunatly being UK based, the price of bandwidth required would be way too much for one person to cope with.

The whole reason for doing this would be to offer a free service. or would it be financially viable to charge a small fee to allow XBox Live functionality but with Modd'd Xbox's. I suppose I'd pay for this, so why wouldn't others !!!

Back to the concept in general .... I've often "frigged" the connection(s) to point to somewhere else whilst working on a PC. (Alternative Servers and redirecting) by using Host files (easiest) and redirecting IP address's. (Our work network is CRAP and we often point to a faster server on another part of the WAN, thats not accessable without frigging it)

Personally, I don't use Live as I only own 1 original copy of a Live enabled game (Halo), but I do own the pack and use the headset with Island Thunder frequently on X-Link.

I'm assuming that the Xbox connects to 1 or perhaps more servers, but if these can be tied down to point to a different host, even if M$ brought a patch out, how would it affect your Xbox, as you'd never be actually connected to M$.

OK, the downside would be if you played Real Live and wanted to play copies on Live(alt), but hey, you cannot have everything !

I can only see possible 3 downfalls ....

1. It voilates some Copywrite. (Erm ..... I'm sure I can live with that) or will a bespoke application actually be in violation?
2. It actually Isn't possible ! (But I'm yet to be convinced)
3. No one could be bothered either way.

Anyone else have an opinion?

it sounds like you want something like bnetd(look for pvpgn) it was made to emulate battle.net so people did not have to use the laggy servers.  It also enabled people to use no-cd programs.  It would be nice if a group could make one.  the only problm with editing a hosts file is that you assume that it's not done by dns rather then by direct ips.  I think it could be done but it would face the same problms as bnetd (DMCA). The other question is just how much does the xbox live servers do? the more they do the more bandwith and codeing will need.

yes, it could work,

whats stopping you using gamelink to send data over a WAN / LAN to another box, can't see why it wouldnt, unless of course the gamelink looks for specific IP's, in which case you would need a router or something either end to translate the xbox IP into one thats valid for gamelink

people have copied the battlenet server quite successfully, so theres no reason the xbox one couldnt be

it would cost a fortune to get it running and cost even more to get ppl to use it.

whats wrong with xbox live as it is now?  nothing, except ppl are getting upset b/c they are getting banned for hacking and shit.

even if you did getting running, i could see an IMMEDIATE Live update to fix the issue.  right now it may be easy, but as soon as someone does it... they will find a way to solve it.  it will just be another lovely game of cat and mouse...

but they could change the encryption if you would ever connect to the real live. would be hard nd live would be down for some days so they won't do it.

i like the idea. now only good and fast hosting is needed.

May not be as much of a problem as you think......

The KB5 Request, containing the following plaintext string in the "Pre-Authentication" part of the Kerberos packet:
"Xbox Version=1.00.4831.5 Title=0xFFFE0000 TitleVersion=268595456"
and also
Request/Client Name = "[email protected]"
Request/Realm = "PASSPORT.NET"

The KB5 Reply, containing the following confirmation:
Client Name = "[email protected]"
Realm = "PASSPORT.NET"
as well as some cyphertext.

OK, ignore the returned Cyphertext, the initial handshake is given in "plaintext" and thats ALL I NEED, I can ignore the rest of the crap.
I doubt M$ will change this. and if they do ......

You know how to MOD-Chip ya Box !
You can font exploit Linux
You can even fit a 300GB drive to ya Xbox.

How hard is it to re-roll a previous version of ya Dash via FTP ????

Like I say, Not a problem !

Yep, it really could be THAT simple ....

Obviously a fully external system to the Dashboard would be preferable, but with all the dashboard hacking thats been going around lately I'm sure a simple URL change from AS.XBOXLIVE.COM to AS.********.COM could be created.
The only downside is the resigning of the XBE so people WITHOUT a modchip could use it. But it would be the Ultimate Xbox hack, don't you agree ?

Good point about Team X-ecutor, But lets not run before we can walk, huh?

I've managed to get my Xbox to talk to a custom server on my own network;

I can click the Live Button on the dash.
See the redirected packets appearing on my server
Fudge a reply back to my Xbox which seems to be accepted.
The Xbox screen changes ......

Then the Xbox just waits for the rest of the data and just sits and waits .... I know it waiting as it either times out eventually and re-requests. or if I drop the connection it complains. (So I know its not locking up)

dry.gif  I have come to a conclusion , Paying for LIVE is better than having a free cheap ass server like PS2 servers  laugh.gif , pay for it dude , also Downloadabel content is impossible cause it gets attached to the eeprom that it was downloaded from.

blink.gif unless you can get them from source

ok, dont get my wrong because i LOVE this idea, but lemme play the Devil's Advocate for a second here,

Ok, i think that due to those with all the Modchips and those who know how to hack the games, its going to kind of suck having people with 1000000 health and stuff like that,

Im not saying this is a bad idea at all, because personally M$ is being kind of gay, but think about reprocussions.

Uhmm...
Where are you going to get the game data, software, etc that are on the LIVE servers?
Who is going to pay for the enormous amount of bandwidth needed?
Who is going to provide the machines to act as servers?
How are you going to prevent cheating?
How exactly are YOU going to offer LIVE content?

There is a reason it took MS so long to roll out LIVE across the world, there is a reason that it costs money, and the thing is... people do pay for a service.

If you are mad cause you cant play your pirated games on LIVE, in which I say, OH WELL.

You do this, create a system, what do you do when something breaks?  When people cant connect?  You are talking about a pay service here, people will get upset when they dont get what they pay for.  Are you going to provide a 1-800 # for tech support?

Sorry to sound like the bad guy, but I dont see it happening.
