I had the same problem but they were really nice about fixing it.  They sent me the PCB versions and told me to keep the unboarded ones.  Nice!  Now I have six mod chips!!
I just finished installing the PCB version - this is the first time I had ever soldered anything mind you, not too hard - and I tested the dashboard and it works.  I also tested a copy of "Simpsons Road Rage" that was burned onto Verbatim DataLifePlus CDRW at 10x using my Plextor 32-10-16 and it worked flawlessly.  I don't have a DVD-RW right now (I'm still waiting for it) so I can't test that part yet.  As for the Macrovision, I also don't know as of yet.
