Refurbished Xbox?
« on: September 01, 2003, 05:09:00 AM »

I've put this in the newbie forum as well to make my self hear.
I have a refurbished xbox from MS because mine broke. What is one ans what did they do to it to make it refurbished.
Do I have cheap or old parts in it and will it perform less then my last xbox?

Thanks for your replies.

Well, it's already broken 'cos I didn't want the thompson I put in a scratched CD-R, to brake it. So MS will have to replace it and since they don't deal with Thompson drives anymore (I should know I've had 6 repairs altogether on all my xboxes), I will get either a sammy or philips. And it was very noisey so I might get some fans replace.

Do you think they would have replaced the bios chip. It's a version 1.0 and that is the only thing I've got going for me at the mo. To replace the bios chip wouldn't thay have to put in a new mother board?

A refurbished Xbox is one that is/was either: 1) had a faulty part and the person that bought it originally got a replacement Xbox while under warranty, or 2) just returned it cuz they didn't get the Samsung drive they always wanted (this is pointed at a few people...they know who they are) and has nothing wrong with it otherwise, so it's considered "open box" and not "factory sealed". If it's M$ refurbished, then it's good to go...I'm not sure if there are 3rd party official refurbishers or not.

Edit: clarity...

So it's just a repaired xbox in a new case. Whew. So they won't have changed anthing important then? This one was from M$.

Right.  Most likely when they refurb busted xboxes they throw away whatever isn't working and put in a replacement.  Maybe they have guys that sit and look for burned parts, but I don't know if people today go through the effort..  I doubt a human hand will resolder the mpcx or anything like that.  I would take a picture of the underside of the mpcx if I had my camera..

They might update the files on the HDD, but then again, probably not.

Hm yeah, that's also a possibility.  Is it true that the ms dash and bios versions need to be matched?  If so, then they would probably flash your tsop with their latest bios as well.  And if not.. they still might flash it anyway.  Maybe robots do the refurb for motherboards so that repairs can be made to any damaged components.

In the end though dude, you got ripped off.

For one, they gave you a used xbox.  Doesn't matter if they repaired it, it's used.

For two, you can buy refurbished xboxes from M$ and they charge $50 (US dollars) less than a new one.  So, you just spent an extra $50 for no reason.  You could've just bought a refurbished one to begin with and saved your money there.

So, M$ screwed you.  But don't worry.  They do that to just about everyone who has a broken Xbox sent in for repair.

I purchased two refurbished Xboxes from K B Toys Outlet both Xboxes clearly looked used with
blemishes on the cases but they come with a 90 day warranty from M$. One works fine but
the other doesn't read DVD's I get a chirpping sound and the dirty disk error message.
Btw the sales price was $88.88 plus tax.

PS I don't know if they open them or not but I do know they give them a new serial number.
