Lightning Zapped My Ethernet
« on: August 27, 2003, 07:43:00 AM »

I'd like to see if anyone offers a solution for this, I've never heard of it being done.  Perhaps by swapping the connexant chip off the motherboard with one from a solder-monkeyed board.  not for the faint of heart though...

Have you popped the board out and looked for components that are smoked?  I'd imagine a lightning strike may have made the damage obvious.

sorry, I wasn't being clear, we're not looking for smoke, I meant burned spots, dark spots, etc.  I'd expect it would be near the ethernet port  - probably a resistor or something...  look at both sides of the board with a magnifying glass.  If that main chip is fried it would be a bummer to swap, but the resistors aren't a big deal.

I've heard that there is a way to fix this Ethernet port, but I can't seem to find out a way.  I've been searching GOOGLE for 3 straight days and haven't found out how to fix this yet.  Anyone, please help me to lead me to fix this or how to replace it if there's a way.  I thank you very much in advance.

go into the buy and Sell forum and post a topic there asking for a port...They r bound to have a least 1...If not just get a dead mobo from ebay and i will unsolder the port and replace it with the broken 1.

I have desolder the ethernet from the working MB and solder it onto my MB and still not working.  I've looked at the port, there's nothing to it except the connect with 2 LEDs.  do you think it could be the CHIP or the Resistor, or maybe the Capacitors went bad?  Any inputs would be greatly appreciated.

this is an electrical failure, not the mechanical failure...the port is the mechanical.  the good news is that i have 2 MBs here, one is not working and the other is...but i don't want to ruin it by taking the parts out...yeah..my port works on his MB so it's not the port...it gotta be some kind like the Resistor, Capacitors, or IC chips...
