i like to also add that "IF" M$ did start labeling parts as DVD drives .. dont you fucken think they would starting charging more for systems with higher demands ?

think about it

Tompson Xbox - $179
Phillips Xbox - $189
Samsung xbox $229.

would that make you real fucken happy? or would you come back and complain about this issue now?

And that's perfectly their right to do.  I would consider the Samsung'ed unit or play on another gaming system.  I'd decide that IF this happened.  But I would not have a problem with MS giving people xboxes of different worth because at least it would be understood and labeled.  I'd simply either buy it or think the price was too high.  (NeoGeo comes to mind.  Loved it but wouldn't own it.  Never bitched  other than "Wow.  Salty price.")
But what's unfair is MS wrapps up this hardware in a mysterybox that I as a consumer can not fully ascertain until I get the unit opened.  Some stores will not let you return this unit.  And you don't even know what you bought til you get it home.  That's crap.

ya thats your case because you are a selfish idiot.. but myself and other people like it the way it is..

<edit> what makes you think i have a phllips? are you a fuken total twat or what?

so this isnt called trying to get people to boycott?

Let's piss these merchants off guys. Let's get them seeing red and calling MS and telling them not to send their shit to their stores.

No it has nothing to do with boycotting.  It's hoes that if enough people take the drives back that have cheaper drives in them that the merchants will say enough is enough and they will call MS and tell them not to send them any more shipments of xbox with Thompson or Philips drives in them til Thompson or Philips up the specs of their drives.
It doesn't have a thing in the world to do with a boycott where the talk would be of everybody stop buying a certain product.  And nobody said stop buying xboxes.

yeah, thats called a boycott... but hey, i thogut you said to take them back and not buy theones with the "shitty" drives in them...
but uhm, if thats all they make now thats telling people to not buy an xbox, thats a boycott dude...
im sorry that you cant take it upon yourself to give up trying to make us return our xboxes doe a samsung dvd rom drive... or maybe you want pitty from us, i dont know, but i really think you need some fucking help if a dvd-rom drive is that big of a deal to you

well see, the thing is, modding an xbox is perfectly legal, but the bios isnt...
but you cant mod it without the bios...
so if you are breaking the law to mod your xbox wht should ms give you an extra like a cdr reading dvd-rom?

Okay.  This'd be like the 5th time I said it now.  Can you please pay attention this time?  This issue has nothing to do with modding an xbox.  Maybe your xbox is modded but that has nothing to do with me.  I have a pure unmodded xbox on an xbox live account on which I play xbox live and retail games.  IF CD-r reading can be done on an xbox, then I want it and have it.  I can then put my own custom music in games.  Perhaps stuff you can't buy on CD.  Perhaps my own sequences.  Maybe that does not interest you.  But if this reader can read CD-R's then it can maybe read other stuff.

I have also personally seen with my own eyes xboxes load games faster when they load them from a Samsung.  I have seen Philips and Thompsons choke on rented games with small scratches.  I have heard lots of talk about horrible problems with KOTOR.  Lots of bugs, lots of crashing and locking up.  Doesn't happen for me.  Every time I PM someone and I ask them to describe their DVD tray, what they describe to me is a Philips or Thompson EVERY TIME.

well you cna use a cdrw to put custom tracks into a game too...
and if all you want a specific xbox is for putting custom tracks into a game you have some major issues and a dvd-rom drive isnt your biggest problem...

you heard this and heard that.. have you ran the test yourself to prove this bullshit?
also if the people have a tompson dont you think the bought it over 1-2 years ago and the DVD lens and getting dirty or faulty?

you stupid assumptions dont mean shit with no hard evidence...

Can't you read?  I also said that games like KOTOR have a very good chance at crapping all over Philips and Thompson.  Every time someone gets a bug in KOTOR, their drive is Philips and Thompson every time that I've seen/heard of it and got to talk to the person.  We rented a few games from Blockbuster not more than 2 weeks ago.  One of my friends has a Philips and the rest of us have Samsungs.  Guess who was unable to play DOA?  The DVD drive brand didn't start with an S that's for sure.  And that disc didn't even have any DEEP scratches in it.  Just some minor ones.  That just sucks.

cool.gif go on eBay or other auction site and find someone selling a Samsung, or c) take your Xbox back and buy a PS2 or GameCube. On second thought, don't buy a PS2...you'll probably bitch when there's a hardware revision and for some reason has an "extra feature" not normally intended and you don't get it in yours. Now if you please, STFU...and will an admin PLEASE close this damn thread?

Youre an idiot to think that theres a lot of people out there who actually give a crap if there xbox will play burned cds.  Thats what a cd player is for, people buy xboxs to play games, and thats what they do!  Besides, i have a thomson drive in mine and since my xbox is modded i can put a cd-rw in there and play an mp3 cd with 200 songs on it.  So frankly i couldnt give less of a shit if my xbox doesnt play cdrs.  I have a 120 gb hard drive in their with about 2,000 songs on it, and if i need to get more music onto it, thats what the ftping is for.  Bottom line is, if your not modding your box, and the only reason you bought an xbox was to play games, you shouldnt give a shit about cdrs.  I was willing to be civalivzed with you earlier but your just starting to piss all of us here off.  Get over yourself! NO ONE CARES!!!!

Hey dumbass, there is no way you can put your own custom music in a video game if you have a Philips!  And depending on the brand of DVD you have, the Thompson is no better.  Part of what the xbox does is let you put custom music in your games!  You can only do that on those crap a$$ drives if you get lucky.  My Samsung will take anything I throw at it.  So I'm sorry you got ripped by MS, but I have a Samsung and now, anybody who wants one knows what to do.

hey, fuck you dipshit.  I didnt get ripped off, im happy with what i have, and yes i can add custom music if i use my cd-rws.  As well as do anything else that i want with my xbox because its chipped.  You are a waste of space and need to stop posting.  Grow up and get a life.  Like i said before, no one gives a shit about your complaint!

This sammy issue is pretty much like the "stuck pixel" problem LCDs have...  The manufactures will ship monitors that have up to a certain number of defective pixels before considering the panel defective.  Some lucky bastards get panels that are 100% functional, others may get several ugly colored dots on theirs - both paid the same price.

The only thing you can do if you want an Xbox with a Samsung drive or a LCD monitor with no defective pixels is to buy them from a store with a good satisfaction guarantee and exchange until you get what you want.  MS doesn't advertise the ability to read CD-Rs on the Xbox...  I'll admit, as a modder, it's a feature I wanted...  Out of the 4 Xboxes I bought, 3 had Samsungs on the first try - the one that didn't, I got it after one exchange.

I do agree with the other poster that if MS were to level the playing field, they'd simply drop Samsung and that would be bad...  Regardless of whether or not you hate MS, please don't return Xboxes you've broken the seals on just to swap out a Samsung drive.  If MS notices there's a "Samsung Shrink" problem, they'll probably drop them and that'll be it...  If you're trying to get a Samsung drive, just buy a new Xbox and power it up - if it turns out not to have a Samsung drive, don't break the seals - just carefully pack it back in the box and return it so it can be sold to someone else who won't care it has a Philips or Thompson drive.

enigmatl:

let's get something straight, almost all [all?] manufacturers of electronic devices use many different suppliers for the same parts based on low bid. if you open several different cell phones, stereos, etc you will notice differences in the suppliers of the chips, capaciters, etc. this is common and perfectly legal as long as the device meets the advertised working requirements.

does this occassionally create a superior product for some? yes, but that is not the issue. all the products are still able to perform the same basic core functions.

your argument that this should be illegal is flawed [to say the least] and would DEFINITELY lead to much higher prices.

hell, one analogy would be to say that intel and amd must ensure that all of their cpus have the exact same oc capabilities across steppings because the are all p4 2.4's or xp 2100+'s. not going to happen.

man, i think i should file a lawsuit because i only got 66mhz oc out of my old tbird 1.33, but my buddy got 100...

i have a thomson. do i think it's great? no. does it do what ms said it will? yes.

end of story.

"And I'm not trying to make anyone return anything. "

uhm:

"Needless to say, he's taking it right back and telling them exactly why. I'd suggest that when you guys buy xboxes that don't contain Samsungs in them that you do the same thing."

contradiction?

Ultimately your strategy would unfairly force the store to absorb the loss of returned Xboxes (which cannot legally be sold as 'new' even if in mint condition), and will be counterproductive - you're just raising the prices for everyone else.  Why should I subsidize your insatiable 'need' for a Samsung drive in the form of higher prices?

Let me also tell you that class-action suits are a complete joke.  Your lawsuit would be laughed out of court, if it got that far.  Even if you miraculously *won*, the lawyers would get $30 million in legal fees, and the remainder of the cash would be divided amongst the 'class' (plaintiffs), so you'd be lucky to get a $5 coupon for Xbox merchandise.  Class action suits are great for Lawyers but no one else. blink.gif

If you *must* have a Samsung drive, pick through a pile of Xboxes at your local Circuit City, looking for a version 1.3 Xbox, chances are that a 1.3 will have a Sammy. Sell the excess parts on eBay and keep the Samsung drive as bounty.  That's fair and no one gets screwed.  user posted image

QUOTE (n00bxbox @ Aug 24 2003, 11:34 PM)
first of all, nobody except millionaires have dvd burners, and dvd burners are too slow, not worth buying till they hit about 16X.  Second of all, as long as you have a big hard drive in the xbox, you dont need it to read cdrs.  Just copy your Games/MP3/Videos to its hd and you are fine.  I got a 30GB Quantum Fireball in it and its doing fine.

are you high? I got mine a year ago... HP dvd-writer dvd100i... 200 bucks...

It works fine for me... Considering most tuts tell you to burn at 1-2 x... I go up to 2.4x burn speed and i can only burn on to DVD+RW media wich is fine by me... I can alaways fix bad burns without wasting the cd... But millionaires is a liuttle extreme... Im in highschool and i bought it on my own money...
