Got the same problem here, with a broken xbox i bought, bad mobo, no hdd key.

Is there a way read your eeprom chip, without soldering it into a good mobo? or will the Config magic relock/unluck trick work?

Brilliant tutorial

just one question - are those 5 h/d's you unlocked all be previously locked with config magic or have you managed to ever unlock a factory standard h/d ?

what i mean is - after a shagged mod attempt that would leave a dead mobo and a 8gb or 10gb paper weight or standard but still locked h/d. Any joy unlocking these drives or just the ones previously locked by config magic

Not a noob - used them dos programs a couple of times a while back

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I always assumed the TEAMASSEMBLY password was used to test the lockability of the drive before ConfigMagic locks it with the password from the Xbox's EEPROM.

the password is stored on an eprom on your motherboard, you don't need a "logic analyzer", you need an eprom reader and a soldering iron.  As to whether you can crack the code, best of luck -  I don't know how much your time is worth, but those drives go for less than $20 *unlocked*and shipped to your door in the buy-sell forum, since the first thing many of us do is rip them out and replace them with 120 gig drives.

I have to agree with seipukgai2.  I can say, almost conclusively, that any specific hard drive password is not stored in the motherbord's eeprom.  Now if you mean that by using the encryption key in the eeprom to figure out a password.  That's something I can believe.  But the ATA security password is buried deep deep deep in your harddrive's hardware.  You might be able to grab it from the eeprom on your hd but every make has a different eeprom map.  You're better off trying to fake the autentication with a logic probe and sniff out password.

Hey all,

After searching around the usual places for an answer to the lost HDD locking key, I finally found this thread.  I just about gave up hope when my house was struck by lightening and my modded XBox (with a fully configured functioanl Maxtor 120GB) was fried.  My HDD was locked and (not so bright on my part) the HDD key was locked in the backup directory on the drive.  I read Mark Duncan's post and was a little disappointed at the responses to his solution.  Just like he predicted flamers started crawling out of the wood work.  I tried the "hot swap" approach (The only solution I could find) and it worked perfectly!  I am in utter shock.  I was so ready to throw out the drive.

If this behavior continues, brillant people like Mark Duncan who are generally interested in technology and helping people will not post their findings.  I find this unaccepatable.  Let's make sure we have our facts straight before we attack other people's processes.  Questioning is one thing (it is a discussion group) but make sure you know what you are talking about.

Mark Duncan,
I wanted to thank you personally for your hard work and determination.  The solution was imaginative and deserves praise.  You saved me hours of configuration time and $100 for another hard drive.  Please reconsider retiring from the forum.  I know there are others out there like me who share the desire for knowledge and people like you make it possible with stick save solutions like this.  Hot swap the drives while running Config Magic - that is such a sweet move.

Thanx again,
Mark Infantino

tongue.gif. Using the power of our over 2 GHZ processors it wouldn't take so long to generate every password and test it on that locked hdd..... I think :PPPP. There are only few hundred billions of possible passwords smile.gif. Even ig it has to take 2 days and if it would end succesfuly it's worth to try to write that programm. Anyone?

I have got locked 10,2 GB Seagate. Other way I have to wait for my new Xbox and do a hot swap :/.

EDIT: Now you see why there's so much about that fucking EEPROM backup in my signature smile.gif.
