Backups From Smb or FTP or any network?
« on: January 21, 2004, 06:48:00 AM »

This is taken from the EvoX FAQ...

"Can I stream games/apps over a network to my xbox?

NO, there is no way to do this, and most likely never will be."

I assume that the technical issues that led to them making that statement would affect all apps (i.e. XBMP also).

I am just wondering if it is possible to map a drive on your XP PC and use it to play games that are placed there...  Seems like it is something that is possible.  No need to write a DVD or transfer onto the Xbox...

If anyone knows how, please let me know

Thanks...

Right now it's not possible. But it MAY be not possible.

i'll explain...
If you map a drive ie: ( W:\ ) then you must have a program (bios ??? or like trainers ???) that will run in background of the game. To my understanding
you can't multitask the XBOX.

even if somebody patch the memory like replacing D:\ with W:\ your map
to W:\ will be lost as soon as you launch the game. You can map a shared
directory with SAMBA or other streaming protocol but as soon as you start
the game it will flush all. Remember when xecuter put a FTP server in
the bios... but when you launched the game no more ftp server.

Hope you understant...
sorry for my english...

That's not a very smart move.  A newbie pissing off a moderator who has authority to banned people...wink.gif

I would have been fine with "Do a search NOOB". but no, he has to come back with some smart-ass response!  Why sift through hundreds of threads?  Was my way so costly?  Ask a question, get an answer...  Seems to me that is the point of these forums...

Why couldn't he just say "Cannot be done at this time, keep checking back and try searching"?

well whenver you launch a game or app from evox it mounts that directory as D:, so if you could hold the network connection like with a script running in the background it should work(i KNOW thats possible because the evox IGR and trainers are just background scripts)

it wouldnt work with all games, probably not even most games since it would eat up a good chunk of RAM, but im sure it could be possible

i guess it falls under the same catagory as an FTP server all the time, possible, but really not worth the trouble

You'd have to somehow manage to code a TCP/IP stack into the BIOS itself (not embedding a network-enabled XBE) in order to mount network drives.  That's quite a task, and you would definitely need the BIOS source code to do this.  A hexedit "patch" would very nearly be impossible.

In short, don't hold your breath.  Get a DVD burner or a large hard drive.

I answered your question even though it's been covered here a lot before.

I asked you to search more in the future.

And I didn't even close your stupid redundant thread (which I really regret now).

And I'm an ass?  jester.gif

We aren't here to answer the same questions over and over.  We're here to help people help themselves.

If this board encouraged everyone to ask redundant questions and not search on their own, it would never have any new information.

We aren't here to spoon feed you info.  Doesn't seem like it's too much to ask that you search before posting.  Apparently it is.   muhaha.gif

BTW not sure how "Do a search NOOB" is any nicer than what I said.   unsure.gif

It's quite clear now you didn't search.  You couldn't be bothered.. despite the fact the answer to your problem was 4 seconds away using the SEARCH function.

Heiny found it in 4 seconds.

QUOTE
To my credit, I never thought to do a search for "Stream Games", as this is not what it really is

To your credit???

It shows you are a moron.

You asked abouty running games from the PC HD. To have the XBOX do this.. it would need to stream the game on the fly.

Sounds like STREAM GAMES to me.

Mr Ed is a nice guy.. he'll accept your apology.. but don't lie and say you did something.. then make a comment that clearly shows you are a dumbass and a moron.  Also.. taking shots at the moderator because you were/are ignorant.. that's simply dumb.  Especially when he is one of the nicer ones.

So.. do as you said you were going to do.. USE SEARCH next time before opening you mouth and opening another whole can of trouble.

BTW.. you are the XS...
