cool.. now I wonder how I can tell if I can get samsung drive without actually opening the sealed box? like looking at serial number, manufactured date, loacation that makes etc. I saw lots of xbox sitting at costco but hard to tell which box has samsung. Any hints and techniques would be helpful.  smile.gif

Samsung drives can read almost and type of CD-R/RW/DVD-R/RW you can throw at it. Phillips reads a little less than that and Tommys read jack squat. But if you do not have a modchip its not a big deal, as they all read retail Xbox games equally well.

Alright guys take it from a pro i have had three Xboxs, (first:Thomson,Second:Thomson,Third: after sending it in to custermer care they sent it bact with the phillips (1million times better than thomson) it reads cd-r 80min but not certain 74-min cheap ones.
Thomson: CD-RW
Phillips:CD-RW, CD-R 80min, some 74 min
Samsung:all

In order to get a samsung you have to be blessed by JESUS FETUS HIMSELF ( apparently if only the chosen few are blessed with the samsung)LOL<

I had to fight just for the phillips, Emagine what i would have to do to get the samsung! ( probably such Bill Gates Salty BALLS !! LOL

wink.gif.

Many DVD drives will work with Xbox, but not everyone. I advise LGx16 (or that 616Q wink.gif) drive if you don't wish to play originals, but you only need to run CD-Rs.

And... I've had Thomson, but i have replaced it with Samsung 616FEB  muhaha.gif . I got lucky I've bought one - hard to get them biggrin.gif.

Oh, I got something more to say:

As Samsung reads all CD-Rs, all CD-RWs, and DVD-Rs, AFAIR it does not read DVD+R media (but I might be wrong biggrin.gif).

Phillips is the funniest drive. I've seen about 7 of them, and only 2 were pretty good. Only two read about 5% CD-R media brands available - other part reads only few types of medias. Every of them read TDK D-View x24 CD-Rs, but none of them read Verbatim Pastel Discs. Also I've heard that some Philipses read all CD-Rs, but it's very rare :/. You got luck if you have Phillips reading all medias. That drive can also beep (reall 'beep' wink.gif) when turning on/off the console and it's really loud. I remember I was installing EvoX from a CD-RW. The console was open and I put Phillips on a hdd (just right after flashing TSOP). The drive was really moving (dancing? wink.gif) when reading the disc biggrin.gif.

Thomson... at least it isn't so noisy as Phillips biggrin.gif.

Forget the stock Xbox DVDROM drives, do a PC DVDROM mod!

I have a Thomson, and playing backups on it is no silent theater. When I do a PC DVDROM mod, I swear I can hear a pin drop

smile.gif

Think i will swap the original samsung xbox dvd with the pc samsung and place the original xbox samsung drive into my brother in law xbox so he can get rid of that shitty thompson
