How To Make Vga Bios Patch Work With Softmod?
« on: June 30, 2008, 08:10:00 PM »

Hi there.

You look as though you're in a similar position to me, ie nobody replying to your post.

My thread

Seriously though I've only just posted something similar in one of the other sections. I feel like PMing Frosty directly. I'd actually feel embarassed to explain the amount of time I've tried getting my head around this. Don't know if he'd be too happy though. Since posting that I'm under the impression that the VGA patcher is for modchips only so the BFM would be the way to go or the Dual-Boot method.

My main problem first is enabling the HD modes, if that is what I need to do first. I have my PAL 1.4 set to NTSC but I have no component cable or a TV that accepts component. I'd like to find out if I could enable it by using a component cable and inserting the green Y into a TVs composite just to set the modes. I've done this with a Wii VGA cable.

With wishful thinking that I get as far as you then your problem is the same one I will have. I have a EvolutionX dash and I think it's called default.exe, along with evox.ini and a few other things in the E dashboards folder. Do I put this in first? As for the other 4 entries. Can I just delete them? Unlike most I prefer to boot to the EvolutionX first and not XBMC. Do I delete the original MS dash location or leave it? Can I have however many/few locations as I want?

I just hope my shiny Frozen cable doesn't go to waste.

Newer softmods don't place the dash files on C drive, you might want to read this:
http://forums.xbox-s...&...t&p=4280211

If your softmod is nkpatcher based (kingroach's ndure and krayzie's ndure), the technique will work.

Also check my sig for the link. XBMC can enable HD modes.

Long story short, you don't really need the VGA patcher as the newer softmod will have the support.

I noticed the link, which is the same as the link you posted in my thread.

I feel I'm hijacking speedypancake's thread so I posted a reply in my thread.

Sorry speedypancake.

Are you getting anywhere?

I'd like to try this but I don't know about this bit

"NOTE: Be sure to edit the 'x2config.ini' file to point to the location of your dashboard on your XBOX"

1.) Is that the MSDash? Or the dash that comes up when I boot on? In my case EvolutionX.
2.) If it is the EvolutionX then where is it located? I know it can vary. Can it be called default.xbe which I have along with evox.ini in the same location?
3.) Then the 5 dash locations. Does there need to be 5? I don't think I have 5 dashes.

I decided to try all this now that the 360 is out and the Xbox was just lying around. Now I have it partly working I like it and I don't want to just try anything. I'm not sure how much I'm protected. I've learnt the eeprom is important and when running I'm using a copy (virtual eeprom) but I don't know how much that takes care of.

Hi! Not much progress yet, but I'm still waiting for the VGA lead to arrive.

Been trying to follow your own thread, but just getting more confused. Best plan for me will be to boot from Frosty's VGA boot disc & see it's worth sorting out a more permanent solution... projector actually looks fairly decent on S-video anyway smile.gif

RE: dashboards - still not sure. My plan will be to delete or rename the dashboards via FTP until something starts (or stops) working! As my box boots to XBMC then my money's on the big default dash "default.xbe" in my XBMC directory...

I noticed in your other thread that you had trouble selecting the HD settings.

For what it's worth, I know that you have to:
1. run as NTSC with Enigmah
2. Connect a proper HD lead
3. Select the HD settings in the original MS Dash - usually "xboxdash.xbe" in C:
These setting should then stick until you change them. The latest XBMC gives you this option i believe...

Anyway - good luck & I'm looking forward to your own tutorial - help me avoid all the mind fxck  ph34r.gif

I googled a bit and I'm sure my dash that I'm booting into, which I left at EvolutionX, is located at
E/Dashboard/default.xbe.
In the same folder is evox.ini and 3 folders- Trainers, backup and skin.

I was very near to just trying it earlier. Thinking if I put the MSDash location as second I should be OK.
But I didn't. I thought I'm starting to get irritated here and attempting something I'm not sure about.

I'm waiting on a Xbox component cable. I want to try something I done with the Wii VGA cable from VDigi.

http://www.vdigi.com..._...ge&Itemid=1

It works by sticking the green Y into a TV's yellow composite. You get a B/W picture but can select the EDTV/HDTV mode in the Wii's settings. I'm hoping the Xbox works in a similar way.

You don't have your Frozen cable yet, and I'm waiting on my component. Probably best to pick things up again when the cables have arrived. I'll keep an eye on your thread.

Thanks.

Did you get your cable? Apparently my component cable is in the post although the reason I wanted it, to enable HD modes, I managed to do blindly using the Frozen cable and various screenshots of MSdash.
So with the Frozen cable I was getting what I should be at this point. HD mode but green screen.

So I altered "x2config.ini". Idotsfan recommended if you need to find the location of your dashboards use the  file manager DVD2Xbox. Find the file/dash and execute it as a check.
I tried a couple of things. The first was changing all 5 of the ini file's locations and I put EvolutionX, which is my dash upon booting up, on the first line. For the second line I added the MSdash location, the third XBMC and for the 4th & 5th I just filled with the MSdash location again.
This didn't work so I done the same but deleted the 4th & 5th lines. Just left it with 3 lines. This didn't work either however I don't think my problem has anything to do with the dash locations.
I'm not sure what my problem is. In the BFM readme it says once you select PBL, which I put in E: Apps and it shows up as "Phoenix Bios Loader", your Xbox will restart into HD.
My Xbox doesn't even restart. I'm thinking maybe Frosty might know what the problem is if the Xbox isn't restarting. I would imagine it could be an indicator of my problem. However I don't feel good about sending a PM. I don't think he gets anything from the sales of the cable and doesn't want to be used as a support service.

I hope things are going better on your end.

Get PBL Metoo edition from the usual place and see if it restarts your xbox. Nothing to do with  VGA. Just to test if PBL works for your console.

I dont know anything about vga but that has nothing to do with what is going on.VGA may however need a special bios to work.
What is in your phonix bios loader file?
If their is no bios in there that would be the problem.
And the ini for the 5035 is for that bios which is different than a softmod setup the bios will load without that ini file.
It will boot from evoxdash.xbe or default.xbe so what ever dash your wanting to use put it in the ROOT of C drive NOT IN A FOLDER name the xbe file one of the 2 names I mentioned then copy it somewhere else name it the other name and copy it back. That way whichever one the bios is looking for it will find.

This is a breakdown on whats going on because I dont think your getting it.

Most hacked bios load from the root of C by either default.xbe or evoxdash.xbe.

Most softmods load from a folder titled dashboard on the E drive by default.xbe or evoxdash.xbe

The 5035 is a special bios that has an ini so it can be altered easy on the fly to change the 5035 bios functions making it one of the most funtioning compatible bios there is.It does not need this file to work it only needs it to customize its settings. This file should be located in the ROOT OF E.

Phonix bios loader is a program that makes the xbox boot from a different set of bios. The bios you want it to boot from must be in the phonix bios folder. When you launch phonix bios loader it launches the bios in this folder and now the xbox will be running off this bios. This process becomes undone upon reboot returning the xbox to its original state.

Thanks for having a look run008.

From what I've read so far everything I've done should work.
Here's what I have.

PAL Xbox 1.4
Softmodded with Krayzie's SC PAL Ndure Installer 1.1
Running in NTSC mode. (As I don't have a burner Enigmah is in my E Apps folder. I switched to NTSC and the
Xbox is in NTSC mode when I reboot)
I don't have a display with component in. I have a Xbox component cable I can use putting the green Y phono plug into a display's yellow composite in. This gives a B/W screen but I can select the HD modes.
Plugging in the Frozen VGA cable I get green screen.
Frosty's BFM is what I used first to try to get VGA working. It's for a number of modchips and says if you have a softmod you have to use the X2 5035 BIOS. This you put in the PBL Metoo folder which you then ftp to anywhere on your Xbox. I put it in E Apps. Also there is the x2config.ini. This needs to be placed in the root of the E partition. You are told to edit it to point to your dash. There are 5 locations. (this thread's topic).

I've done all this. My Xbox should restart after selecting PBL in the Apps folder. It doesn't.

I think I've linked already but I will again. I don't want to hijack this thread and my thread is
http://forums.xbox-s...o...54660&st=30

There are 3 pages to the thread. I appreciate your input but please can you post there. Thanks.
Idotsfan has given me some suggestions but I haven't tried them yet. Today I'm a little busy but tomorrow, Sunday, I have all day to devote to it.
