Vga Internal Sync Mod Howto
« Reply #15 on: March 09, 2008, 07:50:00 AM »

Unfortunatelly this mod don't work for me. I've checked every thing 4 times and i've done everything like on diagram.
for tis mod I've bought new parts, so i doubt that this is their fault. To be sure i'm gonna make one more.
I've this VGA cable
Maybe you can give me some advice?

I don't recive any e-mail notification, i have gmail account. Anyone know what should i do to recive this emails? When I write replies it seez " You are currently receiving email notification of replies", so I should have this emails.

ok. some things to try. post your findings

does the cable work on a sync on green supported monitor?

make sure the sync signals are going to the right pins on the vga socket. (check with a multimeter on resistance mode)
and maybe try swapping the H and V sync signals, you might have them the wrong way.

check if you have some voltage on the sync pins on the vga socket. if you get no voltage, try the following;

check you are getting a signal from the xbox, the sync wires using a multimeter (or a scope if you have one) you should get some voltage below 1.5V
if thats not fine, you might have to check your solder connections.

if that was fine, check your circuit is working. first check the voltage on pin 14 (Vcc) make sure its around 2.6V
then check that the chip is working. use a resistor connected to Vcc and touch the input pins while measuring the voltage on the outputs. if you have it all wired up correctly, it should go high (2.6V) when you touch the inputs with the resistor

and what screen are you testing it on?
if you still can't work out the problem, post some pics of the top and bottom of your finished board, and maybe a pic of it all connected up.
its also very possible i screwed something up in the tutorial.

Another possibility is to use a pair of general-purpose transistors (anything handy, 2N2222s from Radio Shack will work fine) and a few resistors. This will give you a true TTL level sync pulse (0 to +5V).

So something like this:

(IMG:http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/9881/testxt8.png)

That circuit's for one sync pulse, you need to make two (one for each).

In theory 2.6V should work fine, since TTL defines high as anything from +2 up to +5, but who knows what some monitors do. It's a bit harder to wire than a 74HC14 (not that bad, though), but it does produce a more compliant sync pulse. In places where electronics are a bit hard to get, finding 2n2222s on short notice is probably easier than a 74HC14.

The only other possibility for why some monitors wouldn't be syncing is the length of the sync pulse, they don't support 480p timing (far more likely!), or you don't have a VGA enabled BIOS (even more likely).

is it possible to do this mod so I can switch between VGA and then be able to use regular Composite still?  I have my box prepped with the VGA Bios and regular Bios but just trying to figure out if I should make a cable with the LM1881N chip or if I should do this.  I made a SOG cable and my Dell Monitor wont support it.  I Need to be able to move my xbox back and forth between TV's and Monitors.  Any suggestions?

All you need is frostythesnowmans vga bootdisk in that case, and the cable as described here.
If you boot from the disc you are in VGA mode, boot normally and you are in normal mode and can use your composite TV setup.
easy peasy, lemon squeezie.

They should be in the exact same place on the v1.4 motherboard too. happy.gif

They're not, they've moved slightly (VSYNC is now closer to the plastic frame). The general layout is still the same though and they're still connected to pin 35 and 36 of the encoder chip.

Will a 7404 work in place of the 7414?

Hi to everyone!
Nice to see that people are still interested in XBOX modding (in spite of the new 360 model).
Well, what i'd like to say (to be more precise, to ask). You see, i live in Uzbekistan (there is such country in the former USSR). A couple of months ago i had the luck to buying XBOX. Well, after some attempts i managed to make softmod. Everything works just fine. But still there is a BIG problem: we have only 1 tvset and it's always occupied by my granny and mom. I've been thinking of the idea of connecting my XBOX to a monitor since the very moment i obtained it. But was very disappointed when found out that it's (unlike the situation with Sega Dreamcast) absolutely impossible. I started searching the web and found your forum with ready solutions of this problem. But... but. All my attempts to find 74hc14 or lm1881 were unsuccessful. And now i'd like to ask barawn if the nominals of resistors in your diagram are correct (all the 3 are 1kOhm)?
Thank you.

unfortunately this idea wont work as the inputs to a standard monitor are 75ohm you would be better having whats known as a totem pole (google for bjt video driver schematic) the idea in itself is plausible

i am about to do this mod with my xebian box that i use for a remote music player (xebian/apache2/php5/musicpd/phpMp2) smile.gif
i shall try to create some documents about the hardware mods if anyone's interested

I too would like to build the internal sync mod but do not want to go through the hassle of trying to track down a 74hc14.
I can however get the transistors in this schematic but I just to be clear first.

bidspec, are you saying this transistor alternative won't work??  huh.gif

no it wont at the 1k pull up into the 75ohm monitor wont give enough signal

i shall draw up a different schematic for this and post it tonight

fyi the 74hc14 can be substituted for a hef40106 or just about any cmos schmitt trigger inverter

Ok cool.
I have these which are quad NAND Gates.
Is it possible to use these??

EDIT - I also found this here
IPB Image

I dunno if the picture is working but there is a section there showing how to build a schmitt trigger and has a schematic.

heres the one i tested last night with success
(IMG:http://bidspec.info/vid_sync_driver.jpg)

the one problem with mine that ive never been able to fix is that the bios wont initialise the video but once xebian has booted it will be fine

hope this helps

I've had nothing but problems trying to run linux on my box since I switched to VGA so I gave up.

Now I want to confirm these parts here as the text in your scheme is hard to read.

1 BC557
1 BC548
4 1K ohm resistors
1 100 ohm resistor
Is this right?

Hi,
I've just spent the last two days trying to get this mod to work. I'm glad it works for some people. Unfortunately for me it did'nt on either of my monitors. I'm 100% sure that the circuits right and the plug wired are correct, and work with both monitors when a snc splitter is added. So I guess some monitors just wont work with this mod. Its a shame cus I was hoping to rectify my green tint problem. Looks like I'll have to get a new x2vga.

Good luck to everyone else doing this mod, and thanks to yaywoop for posting it
