I recently purchased a 100gb hd, but i only could use 85gb of it due to the other 15gb going to overhead. Anyway, if i were to get a 160gb hd, would the extra 23gb that the xbox cannot use go towards over head, giving me the max 137gb to use? Or would it just subtract the overhead from 137gb, leaving me with something like 120gb of usable space?

yes, yes, i understand that, but my question is, will the 23gb that isn't recognized by the xbox be used as the need over head that large hdd's need, or will it cut into the 137gb, leaving me with 120gb or something? Make sense?

The extra space would be dead space, as in not used and not usable, while used on the Xbox.

To my undertanding the next executer 2 bios will allow larger hard drives above 137GB, Play it safe with a 120GB Hd, leave the 160 GB drive in your pc. Besides There is only so much you can do with 100GB+ drives.

Well I am a complete Moron and read that wrong, but can someone confirm that it is suppose to increase the HDD maximum of 120gb?

According to a thread I read earlier, the XBOX will never be able to use more than 137 GB because it has the 24 bit LBA limitation, and this can't be changed. The person who said this could have been wrong though.

You can never say never, initially a LBA hack/chip-mod is not out of the question. Remember that when Maxtor first rolled out its 100GB+ lineup it started packing the drives with a UltraATA 133 PCI card that supported larger drives than 137GB+. I would say we are not too far off from seeing such a device. 2 Years ago nobody thought they could hack the xbox, 2 years ago nobody thought it was possible to put a drive larger than 8Gb in the xbox, 2 years ago nobody thought they could copy games to their XB HD and play them....The Impossible is not that all impossible.

I know exactly what you mean Foe-hammer. The 137 GB limit is actually 128 GB. So you'll only be able to use 128 gb. Here's why.

I HATE the fucking marketer who came up with that deceitful scheme of advertising. For example, a 120 gb HD is really 120 billion bytes. And we know 1024 bytes = 1 MB , so divide 120 billion bytes by 1024 three times and you'll see it's actually 111 GB. Man I wish I could kick the ass the motherfucker who invented this marketing ploy to sell us 7% less HD space. In the past it never used to be like this.

kind of like a semi-pyric victory bridge, gain 1000 and loose 24, It is no secred that hard drive manufacturers have been doing this for years, fortunately though they are referring to "possible space" by implementation of different format options. Fat16, Fat32, NTFS really are the ones to blame for the mis-interpretation of filesize. Dont forget you also loose space to partitions as well, so the xbox probably shrinks the drive size lower than 111GB. Did anyone say XBOX defragmentation........
