absolutely not, the xbox dvd drive (both samsung and thompson) have specialized firmware for recognizon xbox games. The "POTS" on these drives are adjusted as well. You need to have some "frequency knowhow" to get a foreign drive to work ( might i mention as well knowhow on modifying the foreign drives firmware), nothing exists yet.....yet......

I did the swap to a Samsung 616T and I can get FULL functionality. (CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW) I had a Thompson drive before that and it was able to read CD-RWs. Try burning EvoX to a CD-RW and nod a CD-R. It just might work for you on the standard xbox drive.

If I put a normal IDE DVD Drive into the xbox - can I read cd's too? Or just dvd's?

Yes, it will be able to read CD-R's,CD-RW's, and DVD's alltogether.

I just purchased a pc dvd drive....

What I have done is set the jumper on the pc dvd drive to SLAVE...and splitted the power (putting one into my hdd and one into my pc dvd drive)

When I start up xbox, with the pc dvd drive powered, it plays the xbox animation...and then just stays there at a still screen

Usually underneath that, I get the small white centered text that says "XECUTER 2" and my evox dash loads up...but when I power up the box with my pc dvd drive, it just stays at the still screen (after the green x animation)

why is that?

Are all your cables plugged in all-right? Check it, that might one reason it freezes up.
Also, what brand of DVD drive you bought? Is it retail or OEM?
I experinced similar problem when I tried to install a cheapo CD-ROM to  boot EvoX. The CD-ROM didn't have any marks on front AT ALL, just ugly grey bezel. Connected IDE cable, splitted power, set jumper to Slave mode, but Xbox still didn't boot. It gave me an error message 12. I tried different CD-ROM and it worked. Probably some brands just don't work with Xbox, but I really don't see a reason why they shouldn't.

Yeah, this dvd drive - it's by "DELTA"

and I also have an LG CD ROM that I tried...they BOTH didn't work....What brand are you using?

should ALL drives work anyways?  Regardless of the manufacturer

I EVEN TRIED A SAMSUNG CD-RW....it does the same thing...

I mean, I don't know how I could have  connected it wrong-  I double checked...split power - gave one to cd and gave one to hdd, and connected IDE Cable..and moved my drive over to slave....

I see you have tried everything and still doesn't work!!!
Hmm...one drive could be bad or doesn't work but three consecutive tries with different drives give the same problem unsure.gif , does your Xbox boot OK without any external drives?
And yes, all drives should work, regardless of the manufacturer.
Right now I use some cheapo CD-ROM too (a little more expensive than the other cheapo that didn't work).

if it's a custom evox disk (i.e. you didn't download an iso, but instead made it yourself) make sure to use xiso to create the image before burning it. BTW, I used a Pioneer PC DVD Rom drive in mine, and it worked fine for evox and other disks, just not original games. never tried another kind of drive tho.

iirc, delta's *do* suck.... erm, at least their cd roms do, not sure if that carreid over to their dvd drives. many people have used samsung drives. I used a pioneer just because it was in my house, connected to my pc already. So, did you determine that you properly made the evox disk?
