A Few Questions About The Vga Mod...
« on: December 11, 2006, 01:33:00 PM »

I have a v1.0 Xbox, and I want to do the VGA mod.  I just have a few simple questions I would like clarified, so bear with me.  wink.gif

1. Will this work on a softmodded Xbox?
--2. If yes, what do I have to do physically to the xbox itself?
3. What's all this Sync on green stuff?
4. I'm in the USA, is there anything special I have to do?
5. Is there anywhere I can order the parts online?
6. What resolutions will it support?

Thank you.  smile.gif

Ok, I will try to answer your questions as best I can.

1. Yes, but you will have to incorporate 'NKPatcher v10-vga10' into your softmod. (This is fairly easy to do if you are using an NDURE softmod.)

2. You are going to have to build your own custom VGA cable. If you do not know how to solder, then you might want to try and find someone else to do it for you.

3. Sync-On-Green is where the 'Sync' signal is located on the 'green' signal wire in the VGA cable, as apposed to using the 'H' and 'V' signals. (A Sync-On-Green cable is easier to make, but not all monitors support it.)

4. Nope. smile.gif

5. You can find most of the parts you need at your local RadioShack, except you WILL have to order the LM1881N sync seperator IC online. (Unless you are building a Sync-On-Green cable, which does not require the LM1881N chip.)

6. It really depends on your monitor. Most monitors will support 480p (720x480) and 720p (1280x720) but only some monitors will support 1080i. (480p is all that is really necessary.)

Thanks.  smile.gif  I'm good with soldering, and have the NDURE mod, so that shouldn't be a problem.  smile.gif

Now, as for the Sync on Green, how can I tell if my monitor supports it or not?

Also, one question I forgot to ask...  Can I switch back and forth from VGA to Standard a/v outputs without changing anything?

Well, I answered one of my own questions...  My LCD is an LG1980Q, and after some googling, I found it supports sync on green.  smile.gif

Does this mean that I don't need any electronic components, just the plain cables?

Yep, all you have to do is wire up a 'straight' XBOX RGB to VGA RGB cable, and your good to go.  (Make sure you also set the 'mode' to 2+3 (HDTV) on the XBOX side of your cable. happy.gif )

And yes, NKPatcher v10-vga10 is able to 'auto-detect' the A/V cable connected to the XBOX, and the VGA code is only activated when it detects a VGA cable. smile.gif

I made the VGA cable, and have the NKpatcher v10-vga10 source code, how do I compile it?

If you'd like, I would be happy to compile one for you.

All I need is the following information:

1. What type of softmod are you using? (UDE2, UXE, or NDURE)

2. Where is your dashboard located? (Example: E:\Dashboard\default.xbe)

3. Do you use only the 'F' drive, or do you use 'F & G'?

You can simply PM me with these answers, and be sure to send me your e-mail address too and I will be happy to compile you a custom NKPatcher.  happy.gif
