Vga Bios?
« on: October 09, 2006, 02:45:00 PM »

Can someone please post a list of bios that support VGA output?
I've tried searching, but haven't had too much luck with it.

Thanks you for helping me out, mainly I want to know if the X3 BIOS support it or newer X2

thanks again,

Just use DVADER's RGB BIOS Patch, and then any BIOS can be used for VGA.

Here's the link:

NOTE: All X2 BIOS's are known to be working with this patch, i've personally tested 5035. X3 BIOS's should work too.

thanks a bunch

so from reading the readme, I need to open my bios with xbtool then extract the xboxkrnl.img of my bios then patch it with this prog and then it makes a new xboxkrnl.img?
and then i take that image and Use xbtool to pack the bios back up into a new bios files?

i've had a few problems with xbtool before opening x2 4983 bios in it
does anyone know if you can open x3 bios in xbtool?

thanks for all of your help happy.gif

AFAIK, xbtool doesn't have support for the X3 BIOSes, so I don't think you can use this patch on X3 BIOSes. Sorry for that misinformation.

I do however know for a fact that the X2 5035 BIOS is fully supported.

EDIT: Oh, and your patching process is accurate, but just be sure to follow the readme exactly.

edit2: nvmd, i think i got it

edit3: i got it patched and everything, but xbtool doesn't want to pack it, it will pack the unpatched kernal tho

Hmm, that is strange. Let me see if I can do it myself again, and I will post how I did it.

*DOUBLE POST*

Okay, I was able to do it successfully. Here is how I did it:

1. Open xbtool and click on 'unpack'.

2. Select the BIOS file, (5035.bin, or whatever your BIOS filename is) and click open.

3. xbtool will immediately extract the BIOS into a folder named after the BIOS file itself in the same directory as the BIOS file. Example: Original BIOS file is 5035.bin, so the folder with the extracted BIOS files will also be called 5035.

4. Copy vgapatch.exe into the EXTRACTED BIOS's folder.

5. Open vgapatch.exe and UNCHECK the 'Make Backup' option, and then click patch. If all went well, it should
    show the following:

*START PATCHING*

[SEARCH & REPLACE PATCH]
loading file:
xboxkrnl.img
file patched!
...done!

*PATCHING DONE*

6. Delete the vgapatch.exe file, and all you should have left in that directory should be: 2bl.img, remainder.img, & xboxkrnl.img. (Assuming you are using the 5035 BIOS.) NOTE: If there are any other files in here other than what was extracted by xbtool, then xbtool will probably fail when packing, due to the fact that xbtool adds all the files in this directory into the BIOS image.

7. Open xbtool and click on pack, then browse to where the extracted BIOS files are and open up xboxkrnl.img.

8. You will be immediately asked where to save the new bios, and what to name it as. You can save it anywhere, but personally I would just save it to the desktop as 5035.bin.

9. After saving, you will be back at the xbtool screen. Just click quit, and flash your new BIOS.

NOTE: The versions/builds used for this tutorial were the following:

XBtool v1.0.18.b2
X2 5035 BIOS File - x2_5035_vOld_512k.bin
DVADER's VGA Patch v0.1

Hope this short tutorial is helpful.  beerchug.gif

thanks you very much, it worked this time, i think that my problem was that i was trying to repack the krnl while it was in a directory full of other random files

thanks again, this worked like a charm happy.gif

now to actually test my vga bios.....
btw, when i have my chip flashed with vga bios, can i still use those vga bios with a standard a/v kit? or would i have to switch between two dif bios?

AFAIK, the VGA code is only enabled when the XBOX detects a Component Cable. The standard S-Video/Composite cables should be just fine.

this doesn't have anything to do with the bios, this is a question about the sync chip that i am making

My radio shack didn't have a 680k risistor so i chained 2 100k, 1 470k, and 1 10k together to get to the 680k of resistance that i needed, this work work fine as a substitute for a single 680k resistor, right?

thanks happy.gif

Actually I don't recommend you use a 680k resistor, you should use a 470k instead. I use a 470k resistor on my VGA cable, and it works PERFECTLY.  biggrin.gif

NOTE: The reason why I say to use the 470k is because it is more compatible with a wider range of monitors. Some people have had trouble using a 680k resistor.
