Fixing The Vga+720p Purple Tint ?
« on: August 01, 2006, 12:16:00 PM »

Yesterday I received a PM from FrostyTheSnowman in response to a statement I made in my tutorial that "Of course, the 720p and 1080i "purple" limitation is still present"

QUOTE
But one thing you may want to mention is that the 'purple' issue with 720p/1080i only affects SOME monitors. My 3 LCDs all turn purple at those resolutions, but my 21" Viewsonic CRT does not. It looks perfect at 720p/1080i. I also flashed my friend's modchip with a VGA Patched 5035 BIOS(Using Dvader's Patch) and 720p/1080i are also perfect on his XBOX using my cable and my Viewsonic 21" CRT.

Therefore, not all monitors are affected by the 'purple' issue.

BTW, 720p and 1080i are GORGEOUS on my 21" Viewsonic CRT. No HDTV even comes close to the quality of it's picture.

I was under the impression that the "purple" issue was a problem with tri-sync and the fact that the lm1881 chip could only split two syncs?  Or something like that...

What I want to know is why this certain monitor does not suffer from the same problems that nearly all others do?  Is it a CRT/LCD difference?

I'm hoping DVADER, Dr Oldschool, or Foe-Hammer would be able to answer this.  It would be great if the current VGA Bioses could be tweaked to get rid of the 720p problems.  Just throwing this out there, kind of curious.

In the thread down the page about X2_5035, Foe-Hammer asks several times for this.  There was no response.  I don't know if DVADER has not seen the questions, of if he is working on it.

I would like to use 720P with my monitor.  The picture shows up with a purple tinge.

I'm not sure on what percent of monitors work and do not work in 720p/1080i correctly with the vga bios, but of the 4 crt sync on green sony trinitron monitors i've tried it on, all are purple fubared in those resolutions.

I've written a lengthy explanation about the reason for the problem in DVADERS vga patch to any bios topic.  I even sent him a pm with this explanation, and have tried again asking him if he had had time to look at it yet.  I have yet to receive a reply.

I know what the prblem is, but do not have the knowledge of how to fix it.

Maybe if we keep bumping this thread he will see it and help.   laugh.gif

I really do hope so.  I was impressed with the patch he made for those bioses.  It even worked with X3_3294.

Ohhhhh.............i wish i could use the xbox in native 720p vga resolution without having to use a transcoder and thereby having it convert component to RGB.

Thanks masticism, works beautifully.  People have been trying to tackle this problem for a while.  XBMC in 720p looks awesome.   beerchug.gif

Yeah, somebody needs to get working on that.  I have never edited a kernel before.  Dvader would be perfect for it because he already has the knowledge about VGA.  We really need a bios for chip people.

Is there anyone out there with experience editing a bios kernel?  We would like to incorporate the patch listed in this thread to a chip-bios.

So here's an idea, NKPatcher patches the 'copy' of the original MS BIOS on the fly where it resides in memory, correct? So, my thoughts are this... Why can't we dump THAT memory region and create an NKPatcher BIOS for Modchips?

Evox can actually do this. So, my thoughts are that if you use the 'Backup' command in Evox after you load up NKPatcher, it would dump the CURRENT PATCHED BIOS in memory, which would be the 'NKPatcher Version' of the MS BIOS residing in memory.

So, perhaps someone should try this and see if it works. And if it doesn't, then we need to find an effective way to dump the 'NKPatcher Verison' of the current MS BIOS in memory, and then we would have our VGA BIOS for modchips.

In theory, this WOULD work.

Any thoughts?

EDIT: Can any brave multi-bank modchip users test my theory? (I use a softmod...)

Frosty, I've never even thought of doing something like that.  Something tells me that it won't work.  Also, I think what people want is to be able to use it alongside all the other great features of a hacked BIOS.  Even if you get the MS / NKP 720p BIOS, that still leaves out all the other stuff that a proper VGA bios would have... like custom boot menu, custom boot sequence, os, lcd support, etc.
