The original Xbox will not output VGA "out of the box" like a 360 will.  You cannot simply hook a cable to the xbox and have VGA.  To get VGA, you have basically 2 options:
  1. Buy a 3rd party transcoder.  Do a google search for Xbox High Definition VGA box.  I think Lik-Sang has some.
  2. Make/buy an xbox-VGA cable, like the one mentioned above, and modify your Xbox.  You have to run a special bios that enables VGA to do this.

I have both systems in my house.  I like the cable/custom bios option better.  I think the picture is more crisp.  I think this is worth your time to explore.

I hope this helps.

The x3 allows you to go VGA with any version xbox but it has little suport for early xbox games(480i).  I went with a HDTV to VGA transcoder. Most run off of 5v, so you can hook it up to one of your game ports but you will also need to get a gameport adapter to USB.

Oh & do you have to edit the games for them to have hd outputs or will they automatically adjust with the x3 when connected to a monitor?

enable HD resolutions in msdash once you connect the cable.. your PC doesnt havent to be anywhere near the monitor, its all xbox and monitor.

get a cable, get a VGA bios... connect to monitor and enable HD res.. done.

But there's one catch: If you want to be able to play games on Xbox Live on your monitor via VGA, you have to get an external transcoder. The X2VGA2 works great smile.gif

Currently, nobody has been able to get a v1.6 / v1.6b Xbox to output in VGA with the BIOS and homemade cable method.  With a version 1.6, your only choice is a transcoder.

If I made a cable and changed the BIOS so it works on a VGA monitor, would it still work on a CRT TV if i used the original cable?

As soon as you connect a composite/s-video/scart-cable the xbox will output 480i only, so you can use it with your TV without problems. smile.gif

I have been reading a lot on the xbox-vga subject, & have a few questions that I can't find the answers to:

How much of a difference in image quality & speed/movement/fluidity would there be from a normal tv (flat widescreen 32" using the standard yellow, red, & white conectors from a basic xbox av cable) to a 17" pc monitor (capable of 1280x1024 pixels) using a homemade vga cable with an x3?

Also does anyone know if DOOM3, Tomb Raider Legends, & Driver: Parallel Lines work in 480p or whatever the best xbox resolution is?

What is the best resolution that xbox can display in games?

Would the games look stretched/worse because of the resolution & size of the monitor?

I am really interested in doing this mod but just want to know if there is much of an improvement 'cos right now I'm hoping that DOOM3 is gonna have better resolution, it would be so cool if it can have HD. That would surely make it even more realistic & therefore even scarier. biggrin.gif

The xbox is naturally capable of 1280x720px progressive for games. In theory you can also use 1152x864px in linux apps. What games do use is 720x480px either interlaced or progressive, which seems a bit low. Eventually even in 480p games look very much better compared to a SDTV image. And in my opinion current monitors like my 1280x1024px BenQ TFT scale the image pretty good, even if for no 5:4 output. Honestly, I prefer good graphics over any "high resolution" because on a PC high resolution means lowering details and texture quality anyway.
