Xbox High Definition Av Pack Not In Stores?
« on: May 29, 2006, 05:24:00 PM »

I recently bought a HDTV and so I've been looking for the High Def AV Pack in every store in my area (Best Buy, Circuit City, EB, GameStop, Walmart) and none of these stores seem to have it.  Furthermore, none of the major retail stores seem to have them online either.  They still advertise it, but I can't seem to find the cable.

I was wondering if anyone else has bought one in the last few weeks or if they have been discontinued?

My only thought is that M$ discontinued them to force people to get a 360 if they want their games in HD.

I can still find the Monster 400s (the component cables) but I hear they are hard to get on and off the TV and since I only have one component input to switch between my DVD player and my Xbox (and in the future my 360) I'm not interested in damaging my TV.

Are there any other options or routes?  Is the 360 component cable the same as that from the original Xbox?

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks.

ya for some reason they discontinued them.

try here:
http://www.estarland...product=14445

or try ebay, make sure its genuine tho.

if you are worried about damaging the inputs then you can get a system selector to external swtich between inputs.

Extremely gay that M$ discontinued them, nice to see they're still supporting a product they still sell.  A switch costs 50 bucks alone so maybe it's about time I invest in a Audio Reciever with switching capabilities and then use the monster cable to plug into that....

Regardless thanks for confirming that.

the 360AV cable will not work.  Plug looks completely different.

I'd get the Monster one if you can't find the MS one.  It is lame they discontinued the MS one, considering the only reason I purchased the original XBOX was because of its HDTV support.

^^the monster one probly outsold it. when you go into a retail store trying to buy those cables, the first thing they pitch u is the monster ones, its getting you higher quality (which, who is gunna turn down, if ur getting a "high" def kit anyways) and they are making more money off of it

believe it or not i just got the monster hd cables at eb games for $2.99, i asked the guy(after i bought them of course) why they were so cheap and his reply was, corporate office does not allow them to decifer between the cables, a hd cable is an hd cable no matter what brand it is considered generic if it's not MS cable, and i got lucky because they were just put on the shelf 2 minutes before i walked into store. i already had the MS hd cables but hey i couldn't turn those down for $2.99

That sounds like a crock of bull becuase if that was true all their 3rd party stuff would be priced the same.  It was either a clearance or a pricing mistake and as per usual the eb games guy made something up on the spot.

The reason I'm hesitant to buy the Monster Cables is that I hear they are difficult to get on and off the TV.  I'm afraid of breaking my only component input on a 1500 dollar investment when I switch between my DVD Player and my Xbox.  Can anyone confirm whether or not they truly are made tighter than normal HD cables?

Circuit City's Website doesn't have the High Def Pack, they have the "Advanced AV Pack" which is no more than a S-Video cable that will only output 480p.  They do have the Monster Cables, but I put my hesitation of buying them in the above statement.

Yea, it only has 1 component input.  But it has 2 HDMI inputs so that's good.  I wish it had 2 component.  But it is an LCD HDTV with a 3000:1 contrast ratio (Samsung LN-S3241D) and that's why I bought it.  All other LCD's only have a contrast in the range of 800:1 to 1200:1.  The picture is really beautiful, just wish it had more inputs.

Inputs:
2 HDMI
1 Component
1 VGA
2 Composite (with S-Video option...1 rear 1 side)
2 RF

and an Optical out for sound

S-Video does not support progressive scan in any resolution, only standard NTSC/PAL.

Thanks for the clarification on the S-Video.  I've never used it in my life.  Component's my first step up from Composite and I'll only use it for devices that don't use HDMI.

you dont need a true component capable system selector.

get one that only does composite switching.. and plug the component cables into the red yellow and white inputs/outputs.  just make sure u suse the same colors for everything.  on mine i have Red--> , Blue--> white, Green--> yellow throughout.  Ive seen no loss in quality compared to a direct feed to my projector (only one component input).  i have the simple pelican model.. not the fancy Pro thing... mine just does RCA and svideo i think.. all manual too.

u can get it for less that 20bucks im sure.. or try a philips brand from walmart.  if u see a drop in quality.. take it back and try a diff brand.

note:  you wont have audio switching tho since ur using the audio ports for video as well.  do you have an AV reciever?

I don't have an AV Reciever yet, I'm thinking of getting one soon so I'll have the ability to switch component devices.  I hadn't thought that the Composite inputs were the same as the components, I may try that as a switch thanks.

However, I did finally find the MS High Def AV Pack today used at GameStop.  I believe it was like the 20th store I've tried in the last week.  Just got lucky i guess b/c I don't know why people would sell component cables.
