I don't think you do have the latest version. I had video problems as well a few months back, but I don't with the latest build.

the video problem is not from XBMC (other than the fastforwarding). my main concern is to get good picture and sound working together. picture is great on XBMC but no suround sound. I get suround with the player within xbox but picture is crap (for some odd reason)

as to the connection question, I have it connected through an optical cable.  You have to get the advanced HDTV pack with the component connections. it will have a small door looking slot where the optical cable will go.  so no need to mod, just purchase cable and connectors.  it'll cost you about $30 just for the optical cable for a no name.

The Joytech Xbox S-video pack supports optical audio and is available in all regions.

The Xbox Advanced SCART Cable is available in Europe and also supports optical audio.

You've enabled the 5.1 in xbmc have you enabled it on the ms dash aswell? That's all i can suggest or try a different xbmc.

@hed
you can add the connections for digital to your xbox yourself there's a tut on mainpage of xbox scene, or you could buy a cheap cable from ebay.

monoprice.com is an excellent place to get toslink cables. A 6' cable after shipping is ~8. They are good quality cables as well.

OP- have you tried installing a new version of XBMC? If you have and that didn't work, try formatting your HDD and reinstalling XBMC. Also, make sure you have digital audio enabled in both dashes like the previous poster said.
