My questions with this one are very noob, so I am prepared for flames of "you idiot" or whatever here.
Never assume the worst.

But this does list itself as the japanese version, do the whole european/asian PAL vs NTSC go away with the new HDTV/Component video world?
Lik-Sang's website states "Japanese version compatible with all US and JAP Xbox consoles sold worldwide".
Normally said: the cable will always work at 480i. If you have a PAL Xbox, you should convert it to NTSC by using Enigmah Video Switcher. When your Xbox is NTSC and the cable is connected, you will see the extra options (480p, 720p and 1080i) in MS Dashboard.

What will the Japanese version do when a game doesn't support HD?
Display the game in 480i. Most games support 480p, though (when enabled in MS Dashboard and when the Xbox is NTSC).

I would suspect this is a function of the system and not the cables, but wanted to make 100% sure.
You are correct. Note that the cable tells it's a HD-cable by grounding some pins. Some 3rd-party cables do this wrong. Obviously, MS cables don't have this flaw. I also never heard anything bad about this with Monster cables.

Second part is the Monster Video setup. I haven't seen any pics on any of the sites about how this additional cable to support the digital audio works etc. If I am paying $40 I can have the Monstor Cable pack and the additional cable and I can go get it today (think I saw one at local stores). Anybody have any details about this, or a link to a forum post that talks about it (search isn't working for me too well on here right now).
If you can get that today (Gamelink 400 X), I would buy that. I'm not pro-Monster, but if those are the only cables that were directly available for me then I would buy them.
