Sudden Problem With 480p 16:9
« on: January 14, 2006, 07:13:00 PM »

Another interesting and confusing tidbit I just discovered is this.  I managed to update my dash to a version that allows me to switch the dashboard between 480i and 480p by pressing the triggers and thumbsticks.  When in 480i the tv shows it as a 16:9 signal.  When I switch to 480p the picture gets noticably darker and blurrier and it shows it as a 4:3 signal.  I'm really starting to get confused, and I'm slightly worried that it's a problem with my tv as opposed to my xbox.  A broken xbox I can deal with, a broken tv on the other hand would be very bad.

Ok, this problem is becoming larger and larger by the second. Out of curiousity I checked the difference between 480i and 480p in a game, namely Halo 2. Just from looking at the main menu alone I can tell that 480i looks much brighter and clearer than 480p. Now i know this isn't right at all. There's not a whole lot else I can do right now other than have a friend bring his xbox over sometime and see if it is like that with his as well. I just pray it ends up being a problem with my box and not my tv.

Your TV simply isn't auto detecting 16:9 in 480p mode.  Just use your TV remote to manually switch to the 16:9 mode.

I noticed a similar problem on my Sony TV.  Although I can't recall the actual model number off the top of my head, it's a 42" LCD. But I noticed that if I go to info on games like Burnout Revenge it says it's displaying in 4:3.  I can select wide, but then I am stretching the 4:3 picture. AT least I think I am?  When I load up XBMC it loads up in 1080i no problem.   And 480p 16:9 games play just fine on my 23" LCD TV in my room, also a sony.  So in short I have no idea what the hell is wrong.  blink.gif

I had the smae problem it seems for me at least, the signal isn't getting inperpreted right at the TV

720P and 1080 work fine

it seems like my TV doesn't like 480P 16:9, it is getting sent but i manually have to change the zoom mode

480i 16:9 gets detected properly though

So I just turned off 480p in the menu

I'll let my tv do the deinterlacing, I figure the deinterlacer in my 60" SXRD should be better than the deinterlacer in the xbox

Yeah, if the XBOX had a deinterlacer.  But since the XBOX generates the video live, if it is set to progressive it simply generates the original source as progressive, as opposed to rendering an interlaced image and then deinterlacing it as you are suggesting.  rolleyes.gif

Also 1080i and 720p work because they are only 16:9 modes.  There's no such of a thing as 4:3 720p or 1080i.  As for 480p, there hasn't been a standard for telling the TV in 480p that it's 16:9 vs 4:3 and your TV doesn't like the signal the XBOX sends which is why it won't auto change zoom modes to 16:9.  There is a standard for 480i, so that mode works.
